It represents a stereotypical and exaggerated black figure that appears "ecstatic" to "eat" the coins that the white people give him.

History
The coin bank was created soon after 1793 when U.S. coins were being created and people needed a place to store their change. It's most often known as a "piggy bank" but takes on many forms, such as the racist coin bank of a black man which can be found in Invisible Man. These racist coin banks started to be produced around the 19th century and depict black characters with large lips, unequal proportions, and glaring eyes.

"....I'd never noticed the there before: the cast-iron figure of a very black, red lipped and wide- mouthed Negro, whose white eyes stared up at me from the floor, his face an enormous grin, his single large black hand held palm up before his chest. It was a bank, a piece of early Americana..." (Ellison 319).

"In my hand its expression seemed more of a strangulation than a grin. It was choking, filled to the throat with coins" (Ellison 19).

"I kneeled picking up a piece of the bank, a part of the red-shirted chest, reading the legend, FEED ME in a curve of white iron letters..."

IM notices a coin bank, "a piece of early Americana," (319) in Mary's house. He smashes it and hides the pieces in his briefcase.

"I dropped the package back into the brief case" (331).

He then tries to dispose of the pieces and the coins inside, but isn't able to. His placing the pieces inside his briefcase represents an additional piece of his past, and his inability to get rid of it represents the idea that he can't escape the racist ideas of others or his own past.

IM describes the coin bank as choking with coins. This represents the pressure he feels from society in terms of the racism he faces and the opportunities others force upon him, such as his scholarship to the college and his membership in the brotherhood.

Race and Racism
The Coin Bank is portraying the black community incorrectly and stereotyping their physical appearances. On the coin bank it also says "feed me" indicating that the black community is helpless and needs help. The purpose of the coin bank is based off the bias stereotypes that the white community has created.

"...enraged by the tolerance or lack of discrimination, or whatever, that allowed Mary to keep such a self-mocking image around" (319).

Identity and Invisibility
The form of the coin bank contributes to IM's false identity and invisibility. Society only sees him as this stereotype and believes him to be inferior. By telling IM that this coin bank represents him, they are undermining his own unique characteristics and taking away from his identity.

"the cast-iron figure of a very black, red-lipped and wide-mouthed Negro, whose white eyes stared up at me from the floor, his face an enormous grin, his single large black hand held palm up before his chest" (319).
