I agreed with how we said that students need better guidance. Students who arent informed about the college process, the transfer process, and the A-G requirements often end up being aimless. This causes them to go to community college blind and end up taking an extra year or two or even more sometimes to just transfer. We need to inform our students more about these processes so that we can increase our completion rates, transfer rates, and graduation rates.

In our Socratic seminar, the comment I disagreed with most was the idea that high schools already do enough to prepare students for college. While schools may offer AP or honors classes, not every student has access to them, and many still graduate without meeting A-G requirements. This shows a gap between simply graduating and being ready for college. I disagreed because more support and opportunities are needed to ensure all students are truly prepared.

The comment that I agreed with the most was that starting at a community college first can help you save money before going a 4 year. I agree with this because community college doesn't cost a lot to begin with and also usually people pick a school that's close to home so you don't need housing, along with the fact that community college classes are very flexible and you can work while going to school as a community college student.

I feel like this would have brought out more facts and reasons why either one is better than the other to start at. It would also help others realize what they would pick or change their mind or opinion.

The comment I agreed with the most is that better advising is needed to help under represented students. Low income and first generation students need the most help because they most likely don't have family members they can ask for help. I would add to this idea how the Educational Opportunity Program is available to help these students. It's not just if the help is available, all students need to have a goal and a plan to complete this goal.

I agreed most with the comment of Math and English being the hardest subjects to pass on your A-G courses. I agree because I do think math is overall a difficult subject for many people, especially because you have to reach a certain level of math. I agreed with the English too because four years can be tough for people to complete. If you fail one year it may be hard to catch up and get that course done.

If I had the opportunity to revisit the seminar I would talk about how we can strengthen our programs that prepare students for college and also how we can motivate students to complete A-G requirements and go to college. I would argue that we need to invest more into programs like AVID and also try to advertise it more to students. A lot of students have never even heard of AVID because of bad advertising so they dont even get the opportunity to ask them. We need to invest more into expanding these programs and advertising it to more students.

Out of all three of the options like community colleges or public four years why is getting your bachelors much faster at a private school. Could this be the organization and there being less students to worry about or even better guidance. If so why aren't private schools being made a priority?

If I had the opportunity to revisit the seminar, I would make the statement: “Community college offers not only affordability but also accessibility, flexibility, and a strong foundation for future success.” I would say this because many people underestimate the value of community colleges, and would only focus on the cost of attending it. They would be showing their role in lowering student debt, showing support for first-generation students, and preparing them for transferring or careers that shopws that they are more than a backup plan—they are a powerful first choice.

I most agreed with Sals comment about attending two years versus four years during the Socratic seminar. He made a strong point about the financial differences, which I think is very important to consider. College can be extremely expensive, and the cost of attendance often determines where students end up going. By starting at a two-year college, students can save a lot of money while still getting a quality education before transferring to a four-year university.

A lot of kids graduate high school but are not considered A-G eligible, which limits their college options. This is a serious issue because it impacts their future opportunities. I think adding this point would make the discussion more meaningful and connect directly to student experiences.

I agreed with this statement because four years are bigger than CC's. They have more alumni who have gone on to do great things, which is what makes their connections strong. They have people who have done jobs in different industries and have found success in what they do. This is why their connections and networking are better than CC's.

I agreed because this shows a real gap between high school graduation standards and what colleges actually expect. I felt this was accurate since many students want the option of college but lack the necessary preparation.

A comment that I agree with was that we need better guidance not just as high school students but also in community college. Most people especially in high school don't know things they should know going into college. So not knowing things like being A-G they don't end up getting into a school they want and end up going to community college, where they eventually will take longer to get their degree because of a lack of knowledge. If we made it mandatory to have a class like AVID I think it would be very beneficial for everyone.

In our Socratic seminar, I most disagreed with Niko’s take that community college graduation should be a mandatory 2.5 years. I think it’s unnecessary and honestly unfair to force people to spend extra time in school if they are ready to transfer earlier. Everyone has different goals, schedules, and financial situations, so making it mandatory would hold some students back. College should give students options, not force them into a timeline that doesn’t fit their needs.

If I had the chance to revisit the seminar, I would make the statement that graduation requirements should match college readiness requirements. Too many students are misled into thinking a diploma guarantees they’re prepared for the next step, when in reality, many fall short of the A-G standards. Saying this would push the discussion toward fairness and responsibility, emphasizing that schools should better prepare students for all options after high school, not just graduation itself.

Not everyone knows what to do when going in and this causes them to struggle. The thing that makes it worse is the poor advising at that school and guidance during high school as well. Not everyone took AVID or had counselors that helped. This can cause them to not be able to transfer out of the community college or even just drop out in general.

Not everyone talked and some people only said 1 or 2 things. I think next time if we get more engagement, better questions, and more in depth answers then we can get a better grade. We did good with using evidence from the articles and quoting sources, we also did very good with including others in the conversation. Overall we have things to work on but we did ok.

I would have asked What do you think would happen if states align A-G completion with graduation requirements. I would want to see how people feel about that, especially because some people do not have the same goal of going to a 4 year. I would also want to know because would less people make the effort to even graduate from high school? There are many things I should have brought up.

Its the school's fault for not helping and properly preparing their students for the transfer. Whether its the student not reaching out or just slacking on the counselor's part I also agree that its the student's fault to not checking ahead of time to see if those credits were transferable.

The discussion was engaging and covered important points about graduation versus college readiness, with multiple perspectives shared. People built on each other’s ideas, and there was good evidence used to support arguments. However, I felt some voices were missing, and a few topics could have been explored more deeply, like how specific programs could help close the A-G gap. Overall, it was strong but still had room for improvement.

While counselors could do more to go out of their way and reach out to students, I wonder why students feel they can't do the same? Or if they feel they can then maybe there's a reason they don't. A-G requirements are rarely mentioned by the school itself, however, our AVID program mentions them every day. Our school doesn't do enough to remind students that in order to go to college you need to meet certain requirements. Nor does our school mention the types of colleges available after high school. One thing I've never heard from the school is the cost of college and how to deal with that. Most non-AVID students go into a 4yr or 2yr completely blind into the path that's ahead of them.

I understand that advising is not the best at community colleges but how hard is it really to advocate and speak up for yourself to the counselors. The fact that many kids cant transfer everything over and basically need to restart from the beginning when transferring to a 4 year which delays the time between when they can start their careers and actually have a good income. this delay is a lot of time thrown away and the fact that they need to on average go to school for 6 years total for their bachelors completely destroys the purpose of going to a cc in the first place.

This was the main idea of the articles and it is so important to talk about because of how big of an issue it is. A lot of students end up not going to college or going into college blind because they were not taught about how the college process works. Also many students struggle to transfer in time because of how complicated it is to learn how to transfer by your self.

While some schools offer AP or honors, not every student gets the same chance. Many graduate without meeting A–G requirements, which makes it harder for them to apply to universities.

I was really proud of how everyone talked about the differences and benefits during the Socratic seminar, not one comment really stood out to me. People spoke clearly and actually listened to each other, which made the conversation feel real and not just forced. There were a lot of good points brought up, and I liked how different people connected their ideas together. Even if someone didn’t agree, they explained their side respectfully. It showed that everyone had thought about the topic and wanted to share their perspective.

A comment that I agreed with the most was that there should be more help/advising for students trying to transfer or even choosing the right classes to take in order to graduate on time or to be able to transfer into a 4 year college. More and more community colleges should have specific programs or paths for transfer students so that they know their requirements. I also think that starting at high school, many students should have one on one conversations with their counselor so that they know what community college may look like if they chose to take that path.

I am very fortunate to have the class AVID. I also know we have workshops, but most of the time students do not take advantage of it and it is not pushed on students enough. Also, speaking to most of my friends not in AVID have great GPA’s and have colleges and goals they want to reach, but have no idea what is going to happen and how to prepare for college at all. Making me notice how behind someone can be, since they are not talked to enough about the preparations for college.

I agreed with the comments about students needing better advising. Most community college students are low income minorities, who probably don't have family members that are in college that they can go to for guidance. Those students are going into community college blindly thinking they can just do 2 years and transfer, when it isn't that simple. Community college students are also more likely to drop out and not continue their education at a higher level. Community college students need better advising and better help when trying to transfer to a four year school.

Only go to a 2-year if you are certain you won't fall behind and will be able to complete your degree." I am most proud of this comment because a lot of people have set opinions on community colleges, but they are doable with the proper work ethic. You must dedicate your time to school to get your degree within the 2-years and not be stuck at community college forever.

I think that you don't really get these connections at community college because it is a commuter school and not a lot of things happen around the campus to get you to know people. Someone also brought up the intern ships that you can gain from knowing your professors at four years which just seems to be a lot more beneficial than a community college would.

If I had the opportunity to revisit the seminar, one thing I would bring up is how community college can be a great chance for students to explore different majors and take different classes. I think it's important to talk about this because many students are unsure about what they want to do in the future when they first start college. This was one of the biggest reasons I would go to community college. Community college gives students the time and space to try out different subjects, learn about what they enjoy, and discover what they are good at. This kind of exploration helps students figure out who they're and what path they might want.

(116)

Many students don’t fully understand A–G requirements or the transfer process, which can hold them back. As much as there are guidance and resources like AVID at high schools. Some students don't have that class. Students not in the class should be given guidance.

I understand many of the transfers are more committed to their degree but that doesn't make up for the connections that you miss out on by showing up at a 4 year later than everybody else. Also many times you need to retake a bunch of slightly different courses so it ends up taking so much longer to get your degree. with this I just want to see any argument that advocates to go to a cc first.

A comment I agree with the most is the need for solutions to help students transition into 4-year programs. The groups talked about how they should have better advising and counselor help. I agree with this because many students are not knowledgeable about the steps and requirements to transfer, so they end up doing the wrong thing or taking useless classes. Community colleges should have counselors for transfer students, specifically to help them and be a guide.

If I were to give a grade for the seminar I would give a B+. I feel that it was hard for some students to talk and some chose not to, when you're graded based on speaking to your peers. Though, there were students that put an effort into talking and kind of guiding groups. The students that did so actually did a very good job and brought the grade up pretty high. Even some of the students that did not want to speak did what was needed like asking a question and responding and interacting with what others had to say. Causing the grade to be pretty high, only being lowered because some chose not to do what was needed.

If I had an opportunity to revisit the seminar a statement I would make is, try to give students role models or kind of like make a program where the younger students can communicate with the older students and see what they did in their time of highschool and what they would differently. This way younger students can be more comfortable and learn from mistakes instead of having to figure out on their own. My personal experiecene was with my brother he's very smart and when constantly seeing him do good that's what I wanted for myself and since he was knowledgeable on pretty much everything I was able to communicate with him and gain the knowledge for myself.

I was very disappointed on how I didnt ask more questions or spoke on certain topics. A lot of the students gave answers but most of the time it was just one person answering the question. I feel like we would get a higher grade if more than one person chimed in on one question. More participation and interaction would ultimatly help us boost our score for the seminar.

I think as AVID students we believe that because we have so many resources that are preparing but we don't think about students who aren't in AVID. Students that aren't in AVID may have some information about college but no in depth information. Although we have the college and career center doesn't mean students are going there to find or ask the information they need to know to prepare for college. English,Math,History teachers and more are not in their subject classes talking you through college applications or FAFSA like we are in AVID.

This was the main point of the articles, and it stood out to me because it is such a big issue.

The comment that I disagreed with from the seminar most was that the responsibility of completing A-G and graduation requirements falls on the students more than the educators and counselors. Yes, students have to be the ones to put in the work and get themselves to ask for help when it's needed. But while this is true, counselors have a job and it's to offer counsel and guide students through these processes. There are ways that they can do more to ensure students meet graduation and college requirements and I don't think students should be at blame.

But some people didn't talk or there was times where it would go silent and people who already talked multiple times talked again instead of someone new. We also asked a lot of good questions that were open ended and carried the conversations for a longer period of time. Overall I think we did a good job for our first time.

We also talked about how we are lucky in our school to have So many resources and wood shops to help us but what can we do to get that help at other high schools so they can be as prepared as we are.

I have been told it is hard doing the transfer because most students have known each other for 2 years so building a click is difficult. Students find it hard to make connections and build relationships because not everyone is welcoming. When you think about it, you still have to transfer and pay for the Fee waivers, as well as pay for a 4-year college. When people take the community college route, they are in college for 5-6 years instead of 4, so in the long run, I feel like it can cost you more money. I just feel like if you would go to a 4 year you can save money and time and not have to spend more time doing college.

I agreed with this because college is such a stressful step in your life and the people who don't go in prepared get overstimulated and sometimes get carried away with having more fun then doing their work which leads them to being on probation and eventually getting dropped from the four year. Sometimes they also drop out because they're not used to the work load and they don't want to deal with it.

I disagree with this statement because, yes there is attention given to students but students aren't getting that one on one attention with a counselor. In a community college, you dont have that network most of the students range in age from old and young, a nd mostly are for people for people who end up dropping out or wanting to transfer into a higher-level college, which is very difficult.

If I could revisit the Socratic seminar, I would like to mention the statistics of general students who attend a CC compared to a UC/CSU. Here in Ventura County, there is a huge number of Hispanic and low-income students who attend CC, and I wanted to hear what the group thought about those statistics. Why does it happen to be low-income Hispanics who tend to go to a CC rather than a UC/CSU?

I am giving myself this grade because I talked a decent amount but I feel like my responses could've included more facts from the articles we have read. A lot of my statements included information I learned from the articles, but I didn't use my notes to their full abilities and provide quoted information. Overall, I just wish I used my notes better.

I would give it this grade because I think people did a great job communicating and interacting with each other. There was some stoppage where people were silent, but when someone got the conversation going people kept joining in. The only thing I think would knock off points from the Socratic seminar is when the conversation went silent and no one was talking.

The comment in the seminar that I was the most proud of us saying was that need to have better advising. This was a topic were visited often during this unit. Both High school and CC need. As a class we determined one of the reasons for which the transfer rates were so low and attrition rates were so high was because there wasn't the needed advising to help students take the courses they needed in order to meet the transfer requirements and transfer to a 4 yr.

A comment in the Socratic seminar that I was most proud of was talking about why we believe that the UC/CSU path is better than the CC path. I mentioned that the CC path not only takes longer to complete, but it is also more difficult. Going from a CC into a four-year institution, the transfer rates are often very low and not worth it. The four-year path gets you a direct connection to professors with whom you could network and get you into the industry you are aiming towards.

In the Socratic seminar the comment I disagreed with the most was about high school do prepare students enough for college. Although there are some classes like honor class or AP, not ever students take those classes and many students graduate high school without being A-G. Only 37.4% of students from Oxnard Union graduate with meeting the A-G requirements. This shows very few students graduate with A-G meaning many students aren't prepared and it makes it harder for them to apply to colleges. (83)

I don't think high schools do enough to prepare its students for college. High schools do offer AP and honors courses, they don't promote dual enrollment as much. They also don't promote A-G as much as their own requirements. This creates gaps between students and their college readiness. I believe that high schools and colleges need better advising when it comes to preparing students for college.

I disagree with this because they might be at fault and can be doing better, but I think that students are grown and should be working harder to understand how and what to do to transfer. Students should be getting help to transfer, but they have to put in the work and advocate for themselves because it is their future.

3 points I would make would be the low percentage of students who get there bachelors within 6 years when they start at CC this is important because it shows the truth about starting at CC. The second point I would make is that CC can be essentials to attending universities. This is important because CC sets students up to be aware and prepared about colleges. The third point I would make is Transfers students are more confident about their major, able to handle cultural shock and financial aid concerns, they are also more certain they want a 4 year degree.

In the Socratic Seminar, the comment I disagreed on is that its advising the fault. Usually when your goal is to go towards a college (UC, CSU or CC), its important to do research on what you set your mind to. I feel advising is important and a huge help but I feel like they shouldn't fully depend on just advising. Just because advising is there doesn't mean you have all the help. Being foolish and not taking advantage of the help is not a smart move.

Community college can give you an extra 2 years to save money for a UC or CSU. I personally think its a great idea no matter all the statistics against it. I feel the statistics going against it is because people change their mind about school and just drop out. Community classes are very flexible and are simpler to take.
