Mandela was a socialist for most of his life, but after being released from prison and learning what decades of socialism did to the Soviet Union, his opinions changed. When he met leaders of the Communist Parties of China and Vietnam who were trying to privatize state enterprises, he was able to learn from them. Mandela realized that a strategic leader is one who can alter his/her ideas and actions based on the current social, political, legal, and economic issues going on. He did this without putting any important and/or highly viewed values at risk. Mandela's leadership was so highly viewed by many because of his ability to learn and adjust.

South African apartheid began only 3 years after gaining its independence. The first act establishing the approximately 50 year period of apartheid revolved around the 1913 Land Act. This act forced blacks to live in reserves and made it illegal for them to be sharecroppers. Those who opposed this act formed the South African National Native Congress which became the National African Congress.

From 1950 to 1994, apartheid in South Africa grew rampant until its abrupt abolishment. Throughout this time, 80% of all South African land was designated to whites only, making it illegal for blacks to enter most of these areas without documentation or granted passing into the area. Blacks were separated into 10 Bantustans: areas for all blacks. This was done so that a black majority could not be claimed and a black government could not be established. Over 3.5 million people were forcibly removed from their homes and into Bantustans. It wasn't until 1976 when Bantu children were opened fire upon that the international world took notice, implying sanctions and UN pressure for reform. The South African apartheid ended in 1994 with a new constitution.
