With test prep embedded into my 11th and 12th grade courses, I have had only one chance to use the time efficiently (3 days a week on instruction, 1 day test prep, and 1 day for LL). For my 9th graders, I will be pushing for one day a week for students to work on writing assignment rewrites. I lose one period a week to HP so I don't have an abundance of time for students to use LL.

I have been using Learning Labs about twice a week (not specifically every other day as the schedule depicts). I let kids know at the end of class when a learning lab will take place the following day. With these types of days built into the schedule I have been able to assign significantly shorter homework assignments on a regular basis (some days no homework at all, which is crazy for me!) and leave larger independent tasks for LL. My thought on LL is that it is the first chance for students to work with new material independently, but still have their peers and myself as a resource to talk through challenges or misunderstandings.

Learning Lab in the English discipline thus far has been a learning opportunity to figure out the best system for my grades. For example, my 12th graders use Learning Lab on Tuesdays and Thursday to work on written responses to the readings and I let them know explicitly that I will be observing them as this counts toward their participation grade.

Carl — With my 11th grade, likewise, I use learning lab as formative and summative assessments to challenge the students in their writing about the readings. Again, I remind them this is time to spend on their work and I will be observing them in this time.

Finally, my 10th grade has been the most difficult to figure out a system for learning lab because they miss one day a week due to HP. With learning labs being twice a week, there learning labs would fall back to back on Tuesdays and Thursday. Needless to say, I am still working on the best schedule for us to utilize learning lab effectively.

I find learning labs useful for students to review material, specially when they have exams for other classes. I give them the opportunity to work on any class related assignment. I notice that they help one another. Sometimes, I use Learning Lab just to go over key grammatical structures.

Learning Lab today by the end of the year depends on mastery and achievement per grade level. For example, my 12th grade near the end of the year are already checked out so I believe learning lab ends up being time to organize or look ahead or do the work. My 11th grade class uses lab consistently to get their work done and my 10th grade, because of the last period of the day, don't often get a "learning lab" because of loss of class time Wednesday with HP.

I have mostly used the LL informally— I have assigned many group projects and presentations and this has allowed the kids to do a lion’s share the work in the building — there are also days when we use it in part to begin work on a new unit. This usually happens the day after an assessment: during these days I help get some students caught up . I am not sure that “officially scheduled” (i.e. every Wednesday) lab days would work well for my students. However, I only teach 8th, 9th, and 10th graders. It would certainly be more a better option with older students.

Over the course of the year, I feel as though I used LLs less and less. With the 11th and 12th graders, I focused on working through at least 1 ACT/SAT review session each week. But as students finished their exams (especially the 12th grade) I have used that time less for test prep and more for standard lessons. Because of the extra class time however, where students would be asked to complete readings at home, students now have time to read and prepare during the class period.

Next year I am going to prioritize days for students to only write during that block, choosing a specific style of writing (narrative, descriptive, expository, argumentative) and honing in on specific skills required to master that style.
