I believe that identity represents everything that a person is. Someone's identity is comprised of everything that they are interested in, stand for, believe in, and are passionate about, as well as the experiences that they have. Identity aslo takes into account the extent that a person is interested in something, and therefore how much it shapes who they are. Culture and religion can also fall under a person's identity, especially if it is a big part of their lives. For example, Marjane is very connected to her culture and the way that she was raised back in Iran. Because of this, her culture becomes a large part of who she is, and it helps shape her beleifs, therefore becoming an important part of her identity. Marjane also explore's many other parts of her identity during her time in Austria, even some that differ from her cultural and religious beliefs, therefore shaping her own, personal, identity.

In my Paper 1 AFL I improved upon my Criterion D. Particularly, the language that I used was clear and effective. I would still like to improve upon the speed of my writing, as I was not able to finish my first paragraph. Additionally, writing at a faster pace would allow me to add more detail to my writing and improve upon my organization and formatting as I could complete my paragraph properly, and read over my writing to ensure it does not have mistakes and that it flows nicely. Additionally, I would like to add more depth to my analysis.

Stan/Kent Monkman Connection

A Kent Monkman piece that connects to the perspective on privilege and power of Stan from Lynn Nottage's Sweat is Our Stories Come From the Land. This piece shows the rich and beautiful culture of Indigenous peoples through their facial expressions and vibrant colours. This piece is also the only one in his catalogue that does not include any colonial figures. This omittance reveals the disconnect between colonial figures, or people in power, and Indigenous people, or the people that they control. It shows viewers that people in power have no care for the actual lives and opinions of those that they are in power of. This connects to Stan's perspective of privilege and power, as he also believes that there is a large disconnect between people in power or with privilege and lower class or underprivileged individuals. This perspective is revealed through the first quotation analyzed in our character poster.

Nostalgia, Memory, and the Past in Sweat and The Rocks Hold Their Stories

Both Lynn Nottage's Sweat and Kent Monkman's The Rocks Hold Their Stories explore the themes of nostalgia, memory, and the past. In Sweat, Nottage uses point of view and dialogue to convey varying perspectives of an event from the past and convey to readers how perspective shapes memory and are shaped by nostalgia. For example, the differing perspectives of Chris and Brucie on the strikes that Brucie took part in. In The Rocks Hold Their Stories, Monkman uses colour, symbolism, and metaphor to convey the rich culture of Indigenous peoples and the work that has gone into preserving it and bringing it back through memory of the past, and powered by nostalgia. For example, the symbolism of the rocks, the vibrancy of the colours, and the metaphor of rocks holding stories. Overall, both texts convey themes of nostalgia, memory, and the past.

Inheritance Reflection

An inheritance that shapes my identity and worldview is my familial inheritance. My father's side of my family is quite small, however we are all very close and value family time greatly. Because of this, we make an effort to get together once a week. My mother's side of my family is quite large, however, we are not nearly as close. Because of this, I sometimes go years without seeing my cousins on this side. The closeness with my father's family, in contrast with the distance from my mother's family, stems from their closeness with their own siblings and close relatives. These same relationship dynamics were then inherited by myself and my siblings. Additionally, this shapes my own view on relationships, and effects how I interact with the people in my life. The relationship I have with my extended family allows me to understand the importance of spending time with loved ones. In my life, this understanding encourages me to make time to see my friends and family, even when it does not seem like a priority.

Fourth Wave of Feminism

I believe that we are in a fourth wave of feminism due to the rise of social media and online engagement. While women are still fighting for similar rights and freedoms as in the third wave of feminism, the main campaign location has shifted from protests and posters to social media platforms, posts, accounts, and videos. While many of the campaign strategies from the third wave are still being used, they are not as impactful or common as the feminist campaigning that exists on social media. Accounts like Impact, Feminist, The Female Quotient, and many more, as well as posts made by various social media influencers and celebrities are what is really driving feminist activism in the 21st century. Additionally, feminism is becoming increasingly important and is therefore being brought up more and more on these platforms as women’s rights are being taken away in various forms across the globe. Another difference between the third wave of feminism and the current fourth wave is the globality of feminism as a result of social media. Rather than simply focusing on local activism, individuals are engaging in activism for women’s rights around the world.

Something that we have studied in this unit that I personally connect with is the way in which Angela Carter reclaims gender roles by rewriting traditional stories in The Bloody Chamber in order to challenge female stereotypes. When I am older, I would like to be an entrepreneur, a position in which women are significantly underrepresented, as they are far less likely to start their own business compared to men, due to harmful female stereotypes that are still prevalent in today's society. Despite this, I plan to challenge these stereotypes by “rewriting” traditional workplace roles through successfully starting my own company. This plan also connects to the messaging that we have studied in the Guerilla Girls’ pieces, as there is also a significant underrepresentation of women in the art world. Similarly, the Guerilla Girls are in the process of challenging these traditional values and stereotypes in order to fight for equal representation of male and female artists in museums and art galleries, a mission that I strongly believe in.

The theme of systemic erasure and underrepresentation of female voices and stories that we have studied through the Guerrilla Girls’ activist art pieces is portrayed on a much larger scale through news stories coming out of Afghanistan. Only a few months ago, the Taliban passed a law in Afghanistan that prohibits women from speaking out loud in public, showing a much more aggressive, wider world representation of what the Guerrilla Girls’ are proving is happening in the art world in the United States. Comparing and contrasting the instances of silencing female artists that we have learned about through studying the Guerrilla Girls, with an instance where women are completely silenced, not just in a specific industry, conveys the importance of the messages that the Guerilla Girls art work conveys. This comparison reveals that the cause that the Guerilla Girls are fighting for is much larger than simply justice and equality in the art world. It is instead a fight for justice and equality for women all around the world, in all kinds of different scenarios and contexts.

Similarly to Angela Carters’ The Bloody Chamber, Maisie Peters’ song History of Man explores the theme of rewriting traditional tales in order to reclaim female perspectives. In The Bloody Chamber, Angela Carter is able to successfully retell several traditional fairy tales in order to highlight the hardship that the women in these stories experienced. Other, more popular versions of these tales, such as Disney movies, romanticize the stories, while Carter's versions portray a more gothic perspective, assimilating to how women are actually treated in society. Similarly, in The History of Man, Peters describes trying to rewrite history in order to correct the way that women have been treated, however she is not able to. Despite this, her song offers new perspectives on several historical and mythological events. These perspectives highlight the mistreatment of women that is often overlooked by society and traditional tellings of these events. While she is not able to change history, she can begin to change how it is perceived, accomplishing a similar goal as Angela Carter attempts to accomplish with The Bloody Chamber, by reclaiming female perspectives in traditional tales.
