The Cantabric Range runs from the Galaico-Leonés massif to the Basque depression, passing through the Peacks of Europe . However, geologically speaking, the Astur-Leonese massif (orogenia herciniana), to the west of the mountain chain and what would be the mountain range (orogenia alpina) sensu stricto extending from the Peacks of Europe to the foothills of the Pyrenees. This is a sector of folds weaker than the one of the Asturian central massif, and they are smoother the more to the east, since the thrust during the alpine orogeny came from the Eastern zone. That is, this old mountain system has been created from west to east. For this reason, the Galician Cantabrian Mountains and the western Asturias and Leon have rounded morphologies and, as we move to the east, the peaks acquire more Alpine characteristics. Erosion acted for more millions of years to the west, already emerged, than on the eastern flank, which still consisted of sediments under a sea between the Iberian plate and the European plate.

The Picos de Europa are a mountainous massif located in the north of Spain that belongs to the central part of the Cantabrian mountain range. Although not very extensive, its proximity to the sea makes it be prodigal in geographical accidents of great interest. At present, the Picos de Europa National Park is the second most visited national park in Spain, after the Teide National Park (Tenerife)
