ILOVEYOU

This malware is a worm that was created in 2000 by Onel De Guzman who was a college student in Manila, Philippines. At the time he was 24 and he crated the worm to steal internet access passwords as he couldn't afford the service and believed it to be a human right. At the time there was no law in the Philippines against creating malware so Guzman was not prosecuted. The Malware used a bug in windows 95 where some inbuilt code would be run whenever an email was opened so he added onto this code causing it to appear safe to other users.

The worm caused between 5.5-8.7 billion US dollars and cost between 10-15 billion to remove.

FACEBOOK BAD 2021

In 2021, Facebook was involved in a data breach that exposed the data of 533 million users. This caused a catastrophic effect on Facebook's reputation as users were unable to trust a company who had, allegedly, rectified an issue two years prior in order to prevent a breach like this taking place combined with the added issue of a previous data breach in 2019. This, in turn, has caused the beginning of a mass legal debate and, if found liable, Facebook could owe each individual up to £10,445 each. Due to their inability to protect user data previously, Facebook reached a $5 Billion settlement with the U.S Federal Trade Commision causing them a huge loss and a significant financial impact.

This one is a bit older. But with an $18.5 million settlement, 47 states, and over 40 million credit and debit cards compromised, it remains possibly the biggest ever hack. What most people don’t realize though, is that this breach occurred due to a third-party HVAC vendor. Fazio Mechanical Services had been given network credentials when upgrading the refrigeration at Targets in Pennsylvania. Hackers took this information from the less-protected HVAC company and gained access to the credit and debit card records of anyone who shopped at Target from November through December of 2013.

This attack shows the financial impact to the company, target. This attack would also lead to Target having a massive damage to its reputation as it lost the millions of credit cards to a third party. Target might also fall under legal consequence as it may be sued over the loss of money

The success of Mirai encouraged hackers to develop more botnet variants and by October 2017, botnet-led malware attacks on IoT devices affected 49% of healthcare organisations, 82% of manufacturing, 76% of retail, and 85% of government-owned or issued IoT technologies.

“As a result of the individual’s DDoS attacks, Dyn, Sony, SNHU, and other entities and individuals suffered losses including lost advertising revenues and remediation costs. Sony estimated that its resultant losses included approximately $2.7 million in net revenue,” it said.

“The hackers offer these services online for pay, essentially operating a “DDoS-for-hire” service. One of the few known personalities that have been associated with Mirai malware and botnets is known to frequent these forums.

This is not the first time that hackers using the Mirai botnet or its variants, with disastrous consequences for victims, have faced strong legal action. In September 2018, the U.S. District Court of New Jersey sentenced 22-year-old Paras Jha to six months of house arrest and ordered him to pay $8.6 million in damages for using the feared Mirai botnet to launch cyber attacks against a large number of business websites.
