Hay dos historias diferentes sobre el origen de la tarta Selva Negra. La primera cuenta que fue Josef Keller, encargado del Café Agner de Bad Godesberg (que en su día fue un municipio independiente pero que actualmente pertenece al distrito urbano de Bonn) quien la inventó en su local en 1915; según la segunda versión el postre es originario de la Selva Negra, o bien de la zona montañosa de Baden-Württemberg, donde abundan las cerezas, tradicionalmente plantadas por las parejas de recién casados.
