They also discussed what they would plan to do with Germany. During that conference Stalin agreed to join the war against Japan and he also agreed to give out free elections. NATO stood for North Atlantic Treaty Organization.  NATO was formed in 1955 from a result of fear from the Soviet Union aggression. Ten western nations joined w/ U.S. and Canada made up NATO. If any of the nations from NATO were attacked the other members of NATO made sure to return that attack.
 b) The U.S. was involved through the Truman Doctrine as well. The Truman Doctrine was a speech by President Truman were he asked congress for foreign aid for Turkey and Greece and he also contrasted democracy with communism. This Doctrine was seen by the communist as an open deceleration for the Cold War. 
c) The Marshall Plan was an assistance program for Europe which provided food, machinery, and other materials to helps rebuild Western Europe after WWII. 
 d) The Cuban Missile crisis also involved the USA during the cold war. The Cuban Missile crisis was a confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union concerning the missiles that were put into Cuba by the Soviet's.

This phrase formed an imaginary boundary dividing Europe. It represented Europe division between democratic and communist.

c) The Warsaw Pact was a a treaty formed in 1955 between the USSR, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, 
Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania. It was formed in response to the formation of NATO.

This affected the Soviet Union and America because they were "fighting" to see who could get to space first. 
The Soviet Union launched Sputnik, the world's first man made satellite into space on October 4 1957. 
During the Space Race the U.S. tried to launch the Vanguard Satellite into space but failed.The U.S. managed to launch the explorer but at the time Yuri Gagarin from the soviets became the first man in space. Later on John Glen became the first American to go to Space. The Vietnam war lasted from November 1, 1955- April 30, 1975. The Vietnam War is also known as the second Indonesian war. The U.S. sported South Vietnam. The Soviet Union supported North Vietnam. In the end North Vietnam ended up wining. 
 b) The U.S.A. and the Soviet Union were also involved in another proxy war through Korea. The Korean War lasted from June 25, 1950 – July 27, 1953. a) Glasnost was a soviet policy of open discussion of political and social issues. This policy began the democratization of the Soviet Union. 
b) Perestroika was a USSR political movement for reformation with a communist party during the 1880's. This was associated with Mikhail Gorbachev and his Glasnost policy.  
c) Mikhail Gorbachev was the eighth and last leader of the Soviet Union. He first served as General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. He was leader of the Soviet Union from 1985 till 1991 when everything ended.

The whole Space Race was negative for the U.S. until they managed to send Neil Armstrong to the moon making him the first man on the moon. The Cuban Missile Crisis lasted from October 14, 1962 - October 28, 1962. The Cuban Missile crisis was when the United States and the Soviet Union bickered over the missiles that were put into Cuba. The U.S. wanted to take out the missiles whereas the Soviet Union wanted to keep them. This event led the U.S. and Soviets to the brink of war. 
2) Another event that I consider to be important is the introduction of Glasnost to the Soviet Union. Glasnost was a policy introduced to the Soviets by Mikhail Gorbachev in the 1980's. This Policy called for an open discussion of political and social issues.
