1.What are the health conditions like in Australia? Think of another
country and compare how it might have quite different health conditions for prenatal
development. Which determinants of
health do you think may affect the health of a baby from a developing
country?

2.What
are two conditions that are often diagnosed during pregnancy? How do these
impact the health of the baby? What are some preventative factors? How easily
are these conditions treated?

One of the conditions that often diagnose during pregnancy is inherited conditions where certain genetic conditions are already present in the mother or father that is passed down to the child. One of the example is cystic fibrosis which it leads to secretion of a thick mucus that affect lungs, pancreas, liver and reproductive system. This will damage the lungs of the baby. It can be prevented by taking antibiotics where it will help to treat lung infections, reduce swelling and open up the airways and thin mucus.

Another condition that is diagnose is the gestational diabetes which occurs during pregnancy to women who have not previously been diagonosed with diabetes. This increases the risk of many adverse outcomes for the developing baby including high birth weight and respiratory condition.
To prevent gestational diabetes choose healthy foods that are high in fiber and low in fat and calories.

role do genetics play in the health and development of unborn babies? Which
determinant of health are genetics? What are some health conditions that may be
affected by genetics? What determines the
genetic make-up of a foetus? Explain the difference between genetically
inherited conditions and a chromosomal abnormality.

Genetics fall under the category of the Biological determinants of health.
-Niklol
Genetic information is passed down from the biological mother and father and plays an important role in the health and development of unborn babies. The role of genetics determines: the rate and timing of development in the uterus, the sex of the unborn baby, the development of genetic conditions such as haemophilia and the development of chromosomal abnormalities.

             -Ailyzzlmynizzl

Sometimes, physicians are unable to put a name to a genetic condition. When this happens, physicians will say that a child or an adult has an undiagnosed rare or genetic condition.
5.What
is the importance of nutrition in prenatal development? What are some specific nutrient
deficiencies that are linked to conditions? What are these conditions? What
foods or substances should not be consumed through pregnancy? What are the
effects?

- It is essential that the mother consumes the correct nutrients during the prenatal development stage to ensure that the foetus reaches optimal growth. Ongoing development of the foetus is dependent on the health of the embryo. Although it is key that the mother is not deficient in any nutrients during the pregnancy, it is also vital that her nutritional reserves aren't deprived previous to the pregnancy.
- If the correct amount of nutrients are not consumed during the prenatal stage that foetus faces the risk of developing abnormalities if there are certain nutritional deficiencies. If the foetus develops a folate deficiency (in-adequate consumption) the risk of neural tube defects increase. These neural tube defects include; damage to the brain, spine and the nerve tissue of the spinal tissue.
- If there are in-sufficient amounts of iodine being consumed the foetus also develops the risk of stunted growth and intellectual disability.
- If the iron levels aren't at the standard required the foetus faces the risk of becoming anemic.
- During pregnancy the mother should not consume certain foods because of high levels of 'Listeria Monocytogenes' (bacteria that increases the risk of miscarriage, stilbirth or premature labour) and mercury.
- Foods that should be avoided are soft serve ice cream, unpasteruised foods, soft cheeses, pre-cooked or prepared cold foods, raw seafoods and certain fishes.
- If fishes containing large amounts of mercury are consumed the foetus faces the risk of not being able to reach the development milestones at the expected age.

6.How
important is parental education when it comes the prenatal health and development?
What determinant of health does it fall under? What are the impacts of low
education levels among new parents? What are the advantages of parents that
have had higher educational opportunities?

The education of parents is extremely important when it comes to prenatal health and development. The knowledge of health behaviours can increase the parents caring for themselves in ways that promote the health and development of their unborn baby. Parental education is an example of a social determinant due to the fact that society in which the mother lives in and the social factors that have an impact on her life will contribute significantly to the health and development of her unborn baby. The impact of low education levels for the mother can influence the woman to do specific activities such as consuming alcohol and smoking not having the knowledge that she is harming the unborn child. If the parents have a higher education this can promote optimal health and development in the unborn baby and reduce the risks of conditions such as preterm birth, low birth weight and birth defects. Another advantage of parental education also increases employment opportunities and the ability to generate an adequate income which can be used for resources such as accessing health care and nutrition.
-lirijana, lirieta, roohina
