I have one dedicated science literacy lesson per week, where I find a website or article for the whole class to go through. I have 3 or 4 questions I introduce first to see if they can answer them, then we, as a class skim read the reading, with me guiding them through how to do this (spotting bold, key words, titles etc), I give them highlighters or coloured pens to highlight key words and phrases, using red for any word they don't understand. After the kids have gone through the reading, I ask for those 'red' words, and as a whole we go through the meaning. They then have to spot the key words that are in the questions and see if they can draw the information out. This can be levelled up or down depending on the year/ability level of your class - but I continually talk through my thought process with the class - they make their own notes.

Their task was to then work together and match up the terms and definitions. We them stuck them to the whiteboard using magnets, and then decided collectively if they were correct, and workshop to find the correct answers. We would then following it up by writing these in, and/or doing a kahoot quiz.
