They both wanted to prove they were advanced enough to make it into space before the other.  In the article it says, “Beginning in the late 1950s, space would become another dramatic arena for this competition, as each side sought to prove the superiority of its technology, its military firepower and–by extension–its political-economic system.” which shows that both of them fought to be more advanced than the other.

Superiority was important because that is another reason they were fighting, to prove to the other that they had superior weapons , military, and political power.

Apollo 11 is important because that is when the US won the space race by having the first man to walk on the moon.
