In our Sharing the Planet unit, students taught younger students how to sort through garbage and recycle/decompose materials.

The Edmonton Food Bank is a wonderful way for students to get out into the community and volunteer. Last year I organized all the grade 7 and 8 classes to go and sort food at the food bank. A grade 5 exhibition project was focused on food insecurity and joined one of the field trips. They were able to see first hand the importance of the organization, how they help, and what actually happens when we donate food.

A market in math, that teaches students to budget, count, and feel that money is real in our world. And bring in unwanted items to sell, donate money to charity.

Waste in Our World: Sharing the Planet

Students at our school took part in a litter pick up group once a week. Students would record the amount of litter that they picked up in the community. We then graphed the amount of litter we picked up each week as a class. We took part in class discussions about the importance of stewardship in our communities and on a global level. We discussed the importance of educating the rest of our school on proper waste management and how education can help prevent a problem (like litter) from magnifying. We created posters to be hung up around the school, informing other classes of proper waste management. We also discussed the great pacific garbage patch and how little actions can have a huge impact in our local and global communities.

Grade ones have reached out to the Lewis Estates Retirement Residence to develop an intergenerational relationship throughout the year.

Students first visited at Christmas to bring cards, sing carols and learn about different Christmas traditions.

During RAK week, students at BDM created Valentine Cards for the seniors to be delivered by the grade 1 students.

The students create a class cookbook of all their favorite recipes. We compile all the recipes into a google slide document and it is shared with all the families through google classroom.

City Hall school through Inquiring Minds. Students make breakfast bags or sandwiches to donate to the Mustard Seed. Students also gain inspiration and ideas, as well as make connections to their Exhibition projects by seeing how they can make a different locally.

Year 3 Clothing

Students will learn about the fast fashion industry and explore the impacts of their fashion consumerism, waste, personal buying choices. Then they lead a initiative for a "buy no clothes month" for their school community. They create posters in french to encourage and bring awareness to this consumerism and environmental impacts of throw away fashion industry.

Students have met a variety of people who are in government and different levels, such as an MLA and a City Councillor. After having discussions with them, they have been encouraged to reach out to these representatives to discuss any issues that they may like to discuss. As a result, students are using this link as a way to take action with their PYP Exhibition as they prepare to present, they are considering ways to include the community and these elected officials in their topic.

Some ideas were:

Truth & Reconciliation (Year 2)

Students will engage in research about the impact of colonization on Indigenous groups in Canada. They will look at issues in our society today that stem from colonization and think about how these issues can be solved. They will advocate for change by creating infographics that educate staff and students at our school about the issue.
