Walking Research: Madison Square Garden

I decided to conduct my research in Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. I was in the area for a concert that I was seeing with my girlfriend. Being one of the busiest places in the world gave the area a lot to observe and take note of while conducting my research.

This place is very distinct from other in the city because it brings together two different prominent locations, Madison Square Garden for recreational fun, and New York Penn Station as a prominent travel hub in the city. Since these two places coincide, there are always a lot of people in the area, no matter what time you are here. One of the most basic rules of this area is to watch where you are going and stay out of people's way. The mix between tourists and commuters makes this somewhat difficult, but as long as you avoid people it will be okay. Although there has been four iterations of Madison Square Garden, the current version was built on the site of Pennsylvania Station, moving Penn station underground. This history means the area has always been busy, applying the same implicit rules as today. Many people in this area are in a rush, so conversating with just anyone walking by is usually discouraged. Focusing on yourself is usually the most important thing in New York, but especially in this area.

Madison Square Garden and the area around it is open to almost anyone in New York City. As long as you cant take a subway you will be able to make it to somewhere near Madison Square Garden. Beyond being physically able to come to the area, tourists may be discouraged as the large amount of commuters may dislike the tourists. Authority is held by the security in the area, usually in black suits around the building. These guards make sure no one is going somewhere they are not supposed to. The only economic factor that would limit entry to this area is a train fare, which should be possible by most people. Different levels of class can be seen, as many lower class citizens who do not have shelter stay around the area. The amount of foot traffic makes it slightly easier on their lives, which is why they stay in the area. Security for both MSG and Penn Station both have surveillance in the area, making sure people do not break the law. The maintenance of the area falls below average as the foot traffic is high, and people do not clean up after themselves, showing that making sure this is a clean are has been a task that has been given up on.

I do not know much of this area, only that there has been four iterations of MSG and that it is the most famous arena in the city. I personally am in this area around once a month as it is one of the easiest ways back to my home state, New Jersey. When i first started using this area, I always felt lost but now I am able to navigate the area without Google Maps. I am able to assume that the people in this area are commuters as many people come from Penn Station. As this is one of the most prominent buildings in New York, much information can be found online. Interviews would not work as well as people would not want to stop and conversate around MSG. There are many businesses around the area that capitalize on the foot traffic. Being easy and convenient as well as cheap allows them to thrive in the area around Madison Square Garden.

Anthony Carrone is a young man who was born and raised in South Jamaica, Queens. Growing up in such an impoverished area, Anthony faced quite a challenging upbringing. Through the dangers of both the area and the people around him, almost everyday was a test. Anthony was able to move away from South Jamaica in 2021, ending with his family in Pennsylvania. To continue his education, Anthony decided to come back to New York so close to home at St. John’s. He is now a nursing student and dreams to help people in the future in a place he didn’t have help as a kid. He has an aspiration to start a foster home to provide a start to all children who had theirs taken away from them. “You only live once, never hold things in, never take love for granted.”

I decided to make my map a maze where the successes of my semester lead to the way out, and the failures of my semester lead to dead ends. Starting with successes, I start with the jazz band and Valorant team I’ve joined while at St. John’s, where I’ve made many friends. Then the community service I was a part of named CLACS was a very positive experience for me where I was able to help immigrants learn English. I also put different relationships I had like my family, my friends from Hollis 409, and my love with my girlfriend. Finally I put some of my interests in games and movies, ending my successes for the semester.

For failures I began with trouble I had in classes, things like studying and exams. Then I did things I had felt like pressure and stress, as well as my sleep schedule. And finally I put the weather as I have had really bad luck with it this semester.
