Definition:

"Academic language makes use of special linguistic features at the word, phrase, and discourse levels."

Explanation:

When learning a new language, things will seem difficult and extremely complicated. However, in some languages there are some terms that sound related to one another. This will not make the learning process easier, but it will give the individual the idea of what it can be.

A perfect example that I found in the reading was discussing stories, plots, and narrative structure. Drawing visuals (graphic organizers, comparing and contrasting) can give the student an idea what is being done. They might be able to relate doing this from the country they might have came from or might even be new to the entire situation.

However, language linguistics can be quite difficult for newcomers. Having to learn the language can be challenging. There are only so many words and visuals that individuals can relate to. A Spanish speaking student can relate to English words, but a Chinese student will never be able to relate an English word to their language. There are plenty pros and cons that come with academic language linguistics.

Feelings are IMPORTANT!

English Language Learners have a variety of emotions coming into a new state. Sadly, have to experience coming into a new state NOT being able to speak the same language as their peers. There will be a lot of frustration, crying, giving up, and many more negative emotions. However, we can't let students get to this point. Instead, we have to encourage and motivate them to keep going! The learning process will be a challenge for some, but a quick process for others.

The most important thing that we can provide to these ELLs is positive feedback. It will change the emotions from sad to happy. That is the goal of this factor.

"Teachers can assist students by recognizing and honoring their home language, dialects, and ways of speaking."

Students who come from different cultures and have no idea what is being spoken may feel a certain type of way. However, there may be peers that they are able to talk to and relate to. In some situations, there are students that speak a certain language that cannot be translated or familiar in the classroom environment. As educator's it is important that we place those students with familiar cultural backgrounds. If gives the opportunity for the student to not feel out of place or forget their culture.

It also plays a big role on the educator, however. It is our job to give those students more one-on-one help. Because they are unfamiliar, there is a 100% chance that at home the native language is only spoken. Therefore, there is no help given at home. We want to help students learn the Standard English and become successful learners in all possible ways.

From Reading, Writing, and Learning in ESL by Suzanne F. Peregoy and Owen F.

Social variations within a particular language.

"Judgements are made about people based on how they speak."

Explanation:

Therefore, the main goal for us educators, is to teach student the language in the correct way. In this situation, the proper way to speak English. Although, there will be those who judge, we want to influence individuals to strive for their success. With that said, we want to get fluent English speakers. The goal is having the student be able to speak fluent in their prime and second language. Teach them that judgement will always come along. However, the most important thing that they must only worry about is becoming fluent, no matter the accent.

From Reading, Writing, and Learning in ESL by Suzanne F.

There are many Cognitive Factors that can help acquire a language.

Being fluent in a primary language is very important and can be beneficial to those learning a new language. It helps develop a new language in a easier manner. Depending on the language, it can make the transfer easy. For example, English and Spanish have their similarities which makes the transfer easy for the individual. It has been stated as well that a well-developed transfer can lead to success.

In Chapter 2, Montha, a student that was new to the United States, was able to become successful even through the difficulties in the language. An accent should not matter the language development. It's well-developed academic and performance that is important.

From Reading, Writing, and Learning in ESL by Suzanne F.

Signaling and Physical Demonstration

Physical factors can be very helpful in the classroom and outside in the playground. However, more specifically to our English Language learners. Students can show physical actions to their educator, classmate, or adult near them. Signals can help with communication. Therefore, in a math lesson, showing numbers can give students an idea of what is being taught. Demonstrating numbers 1-10 with their fingers. Eventually the student will pick up on the physical signs and will be able to speak what they see.
