He severed as president from 1801 through 1809.  In 1803 he did the Louisiana Purchase, which almost doubled the country's territory. He was the first President to be inaugurated in Washington DC. </div>]]></description>

His dad Peter Jefferson  was a farmer and surveyor and his mother Jane Randolph Jefferson came from a prominent Virginia family. Thomas was the third child and oldest son. He had six sisters and a brother. In 1762, Jefferson graduated from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. </div>]]></description>

The expedition was called the Corps of Discovery. It lasted from 1804 to 1806 When they came back, they provided valuable information about the geography, American Indian tribes, animals and plant life of the western part of the continent.</div>]]></description>

At 33 years old he was asked to write the Declaration of Independence The Declaration of Independence, explained why the 13 colonies wanted to be free of British rule. It showed the importance of individual rights and freedoms. The  Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776.</div>]]></description>
