I think the organisation for the SLC's is great because it gives the parents one late night to get in to see the teacher. The online booking system works really well and the forms that we sent home for the parents (Thanks Daph!) were extremely helpful! Well Done to all and thanks leadership team for your organisation :)

Maybe the happy face forms should be a part of the enrolment form pack or given out in the first week of each term. We could spend more time on Students talking about where they think they need help. Subjects they find difficult and things that intimidate or frustrate them during class learning. What strats they have when they don't understand something. How confident they feel to debate or challenge something thats against what they believe or know. That kind of stuff. Most of the time they freely tell you what they enjoy, but if they're frustrated or upset, (the majority according to my sheet responses) shut down or go incognito. I have one or two pillow punchers and door slammers too. Highlight-listening to 7/8s talk about how happy they are at Roscommon and sharing their blogs with parents

Well done to everyone.
Sorry I need to add something about the green forms. I like this idea which helps me to understand more about each child especially those who have returned their forms.

It is always a pleasure to meet with parents. Online booking system did not work very well for a few of my parents, but it is something new and I am sure we will get better at using this system. "Happy "Getting to know your child sheet" , helped me get useful information. Many parents did not bring the sheet back. It also created good talking points.
I wish we could do something more for those parents who did not attend.

Well, we prep our kids, we had a HPM whanau hui, (some show, others don't) we've been using the 'Faces' form for a few years now, and we strive to get the whanau involved in the SLC process so that its just a matter of (with a shared understanding) and partnership of their child's education, 'the child at the centre of all we do' - sign the form to ALL take ownership of the child's learning needs - the few Maoris (my class) who bothered to turn up, had good informative discussions, but I had also prepared my own general comments about the child - Wish I could have 100% attendance but told Parents to come in anytime... and lastly,
What happened with our awesome kai we usually have? felt a bit cheated their (lol) its what we ALL look forward to - manaakitanga, aroha, whanaungatanga. Mauriora whanau :)

Really enjoyed SLC had some really good conversations with parents and tried to get my students to talk about their learning with a bit guidance. I did have a few issues with parents not being able to book online or not knowing how to, which resulted in a lot of parents showing up on the day and expecting to get slotted in, and then they would get upset having to wait due to slots being already taken. However, overall it was a good turn out and great to see parents supporting their children.

Tania As a 'parent' I liked the format and found it informative and easy to follow even though I didn't get the smiley face sheet (still sitting in the bottom of the schoolbag) but able to talk to teachers copy and fill in later at home. Was very succint and enabled the conference to flow well. Good to hear the child

I always be looking forward to this time because the parents and I together with the students [if they bring her/him] can listen to each other and discuss ways to better students learning. The green forms given out was a great help for me to see the needs of the students but when parents state the needs that I see have been grasped already, I shared with them others 'felt needs' that their children need. Some parents need to have one book a night for homework. I explained, " that in order for their children to read with understanding, confident and enjoyments, the children need to do many activities to help them understand the text, otherwise no point to give out books. ENOUGH I'M LECTURING NOW.
I enjoyed the two nights.

I feel it was a success having 2 days and those times worked well!!! Got feed back from some of my parents that don't have internet and don't know how to use a computer they didn't like the online booking as many of my parents booked at the office but I think giving them the option is great. I also think having it in week 6 also gave the teachers and students more time to get to know each other.

was good to take a breath and actually talk to the parents. They all said their child was happy at school and liked coming. The yellow questionnaire sheet wasn't sent home with the kids because I knew it wouldn't come back so i filled it in when they came in for interviews which worked much better for me. I didn't use the smiley sheet. The yellow sheet was better. Half my parents turned up only one didn't who was booked. I think we should start the interviews at 1.30 to give us a breather between kids leaving and the first interview. It takes at least 15 to 20 minutes to say goodbye to the kids and see the last one off. then there's only ten minutes to do a quick tidy up before the first parent is at the door. I didn't have time for a drink or lunch.

I felt that the 15 minutes allocated to my parents wasn't enough. For me it was more of an information meeting with parents rather than a SLC. With my Year 7 parents I spent most of the time explaining the Year 7 Puberty meeting that afternoon, Camp details and what differentiates the Year 7 learning from the Year 6 in my class. Parents were also curious to know how effective computers are, in their childs learning. Time prevailing we touched on their Childs strengths and weakness' and what we're aiming to achieve by the end of the year. Having already built relationships with these parents and knowing my students from previous years, made it a lot easier.
Bookings - tick
Organisation - tick
happy with outcome- tick
