South African Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, has revealed a plan to let learners leave school at Grade 9, equipped with a General Education Certificate (GEC).
In order to get a job in South Africa that offers sufficient income and security, you atleast need a matric certificate. Most of the time, an NSC is not enough. So to think that offering a GEC in Grade 9 and expecting these learners to find jobs is nearly impossible.
A shortage of trade schools and a lack of skills and jobs could result in an even higher unemployment rate, and more kids on the streets.
The more young people out of school, and out of work, will put more of a burden on the government grant system. This is a responsibility that the government will not be able to sustain.
