The Goth Culture by

I created this mini-curation for baby bats and curious minds to learn and understand the wonderful world of Goth. I have been a part of the Goth Scene for a little over 10 years now, and I have been doing my own research on the community since 2017, and am currently working on a documentary and writing a book about the subculture. Please take the time to browse over the key concepts and terms to have an easier time reading and engaging with the content.

I wanted to show my career and intertwine it with who I am as a person. As you look through this board, I want you to keep in mind that Goth is an umbrella term for many alternative cultures, however, the Goth community as the 1980's knew it still exist and thrive today.

This title is also referred to people who were in the scene during the 1980's, the year of Goth's birth.

The Batcave - A night club in London that is credited to being the birthplace of Goth.

Safe Haven - A night club or bar that most alternative people frequent. (Alternative people have endured harassment and assault so frequently the concept of a "safe haven" was usually attached to a bar or club that accepted and even protected the community in times of need.)

Dark Wave/New Wave - A genre of music that encompasses the majority of Goth music.

Cybergoth - Goth raver with a more specific style that includes Cyberlox, respirators, and rave wear.

Graver - Another term for a Cybergoth raver.

Mall Goth - A term to describe a part-timer of the subculture, and in some instances another word for "poser."

Emo - A subculture that emerged from MySpace accompanied by music similar to punk but deals with more emotional topics hence the "emo" for emotional. This is NOT a Goth subculture, but there are notable cross overs when it comes to style.

Other terms that may appear:

Rivethead
Bubble Goth
Steam Punk
Punk
Post-Punk
Glam Goth
Romantic Goth
Vamp Goth
Pastel Goth
Trad Goth (Traditional)
Deathrock
Southern Gothic
Goth Rock
Tribal Goth
Viking Goth
Geek Goth
Fetish Goth
Industrialist
Medieval Goth
Dark Cabaret
Gothic Metal
Horror Punk
Grunge Goth
Edwardian Goth
Victorian Goth
Ethereal Wave
Cold Wave
Rockabilly

It is also important to note that because of the lack of understanding and research about these individual groups, most information is gathered through digital curation through social media including Tumblr, MySpace, VampireFreaks, and other chat forums.

For this mini curation I wanted to take a step away from the world of ADHD and focus on an aspect of my life I haven't shared much about during this course. I have been a part of the Goth community for little over a decade and have been doing research on the community itself since 2017 in hopes of publishing a book about the community's influence on subculture, media, and fashion. But I think I struggled a little more with this particular project because this is not just a topic I am passionate about, but a lifestyle I have been for the majority of my life. I had to actually step back and refocus myself on the main topic at hand. I wanted to focus on that "what" and "how" of Goth rather than the subculture as a whole because that would encompass countless sections about gender, race, religion, politics, evolution of style, evolution of music, history of goth icons, etc. I wanted to create a simple guide for people who have never heard of Goth and want to know more and don't know where to begin. But after doing this project, I think I am going to transfer this over to Wakelet and make a more in depth version after this course. I enjoyed this project the most I have to say.
