Ask students to digest the reading and highlight out key sentences;

Check the reading by text-rendering out the highlighted quotes in class. The text-rendering can serve as a collect review of the text in a fast way, setting a tone for further discussion.

Cloze filling quiz

Blank out key words from the reading, ask students to deduct from the context. They are not asked to fill the exact words as the original text. Ask them annotate their thinking process on the paper too.

When teacher solicited the blank out content, it already presented the students on what is important in the text.

Sequencing the Paragraphs

Print out different paragraphs or excerpts of the text, assign the pages to the students when they come in class. Ask them to read and talk among themselves, coordinate the sitting according to the textual sequence.

Grouping based on textual clusters

Print out excerpts from the texts, sorted them in to "Arguments" and "Evidences", assign the pages to the students. Ask students to sit with whoever has the corresponding "Arguments" or "Evidences".

Reserve 10mins for just posing questions

I like to end discussion with a 10mins session of intensive question shooting. The students do not have to answer all the questions. I found it is a very efficient way to share genuine inquiry and expand on divergent thoughts.

Keywords Lottery Box

Asking student to note down keywords that concluded from a day's discussion. One key word per post-it note. Accumulate a box of key words that were organically farmed from students' discussion over a cycle.

When concluding the session, instead of given essay topic or prompt for students to write about. Ask students to draw 3 key words out of the box and write about their connectivity and how do they contextualize in the reading or discussion.

Fish Bowl Discussion

Divide class in to two groups: inner circle of discussion group and the outter circle of observation groups.

Trains students to listen.

Reserves more time for each individual for discussion in short block classes.

Practices given feedbacks and peer reviews.

Word List

Ask students to read quotes from the reading, the teacher or a student can capture keywords from what they heard.

The clusters of words can serve as a scaffolding or a mood-board for students for their discussion.

To conclude a discussion.

Ask students to generate a word list as a way to synthesis prominent ideas from the discussion session.
