Identity: an individual’s combination of behaviors, preferences, thoughts, talents, and beliefs. Identities evolve over a lifespan.

James Marcia interviewed many people and asked how they developed their ideas, beliefs and so on.

Marcia believed that identity was mostly based on two things:

1. _{Occupation: refers to main role one has in society} 
2. _{Ideology: refers to a person’s fundamental beliefs}

• Based on Marcia’s interviews he identified that there are four main identity statuses (degrees to which a person has achieved a set identity) :

1. _{Identity Diffusion: no idea who you are or what you want. No strong desires or dreams. Aren’t experimenting or trying things.}
2. _{Identity Foreclosure: refers to people who have made commitments to beliefs in the future, but never really explored their options.} 
3. _{Identity Moratorium: opposite of foreclosure. Refers to people who continually explore ideologies and beliefs but never make a decision on these ideologies or beliefs. Constant experimentation without results}
4. _{Identity Achievement: explored many possible beliefs and have made commitments that make them comfortable and happy. These individuals are comfortable with themselves and not worried about other people’s opinions.}

This is because I'm still en route to completion of my education, and although I realize Ultimately what I would like to achieve in my lifetime, I haven't made any significant commitments.
