The video itself contains a lot of imagery some would consider suggestive, such as a scantily clad (for the time) Madonna, burning crosses, and a black man being falsely accused which prompted Madonna to pray to a black saint. The church was not happy with this, being condemned by the Vatican. Pepsi was also not happy with this, having an ad with the song and Madonna quickly getting pulled of the air in the US.

This horrified her former manager who said "That's it, you've ruined your career", as it would be assumed that showing that much of her body in such a risqué way would doom her. This went beyond the "normal" Madonna routine as it crossed the lines for wat was, at the time, social normes on sexuality. People who themselves were gay cheered while many other attendants had mixed opinions or confused faces. Even 18 years later, an article from The GUardian, from which some of this information came from is rated 17+, so it remains something engrained into Madonna's legacy to this day.
