I had an AP history teacher in high school that was working on his masters degree at the time. I had never been in front of a real historian before. It was clear how much he loved history and how much he loved really digging into it to study it. I had also never been taught in a format where I was the historian. I loved the experience of being a REAL student of history and knew I could never do anything else. I remember how I felt in that classroom and want to be sure I give that opportunity to my students.

I have had many students, parents and colleagues use the phrase "You make history come alive". I hope this is the case and it always makes me feel like I am working to recreate the feeling I had as a student of history. My two most impactful learning experiences were from my kindergarten teacher (Mrs. Ingram) & my 6-8th grade math teacher (Mr. Gaskin). I was incredibly shy and cried every time my mom dropped me off to school, and Mrs. Ingram really worked with me to pull me out of my shell. She built the strongest relationship with me (and all other students) because she knew we could not learn if we did not feel safe. Mr. Gaskin exposed our class to SO MANY different strategies and encouraged us to use what worked best for our own "math brain." It is something that has really stuck with me and a phrase I use in my classroom daily. Both of these incredible educators have impacted my role in my own classroom, even 15-20 years later.

I begin my day with sharing Good News with the class, allowing them to share with peers, and then having a few randomly selected students share with the class (if they are comfortable). My strongest gift is my love of reading. I love to read all genres of books, and I make it a goal to read as many books as possible throughout the year. At the beginning of the school year, I share all the books I read over the summer. My passion for the stories and characters brings them to life for the students, and this helps them create a love for reading. This opens the door for many conversations in the classroom, opportunities to make connections to the real world, and bonding moments over shared experiences, likes, and dislikes. Throughout the school year, I continue to share what I have read, and students share their stories and make recommendations to me and their peers.

When I was in school, I was very shy to the point where I never talked to anyone. People thought of me as rude, but I was terrified to give an answer and be wrong. I had a very negative experience with my GT teacher all the way through 4th grade, and I never had any confidence in myself. I moved schools in 5th grade, and my GT teacher, who was the total opposite of my previous one, told me that I had to start talking or I would never be successful. She helped me find my voice. She supported me in everything I did throughout 5th and 6th grade, and I learned to have confidence in myself and help others who were also struggling to find their voice. Because of this teacher (who came to my graduation party, wedding shower, and baby shower) I am a stronger and more confident person. Every time I feel the need to back away and stand in the background, I remember the faith she had in me. I believe it is my role to make sure those students who have ideas, but might be too shy to share them, are heard and encouraged.

I believe that the excitement I have for reading is contagious, and when my students see my passion, they want to know where it comes from. This encourages them to pick up the books, and they just keep coming back for more. My teacher is always in the back of my mind, and I always inspire to be like her. She positively impacted so many students, and I feel that if I encompass her same values in my teaching and relationships with my students, I will be able to reach those who might have been skipped over and show them how they can contribute to our class and society.

I share my stories with anyone who will hear them. I always talk about the books I'm reading on social media, with my colleagues, and with my students. I have copies of the books in my classroom, and they are available for anyone to borrow. Sometimes I will even let the kids keep them if they want to share them with others. I also share my story of my inspirational teacher with my colleagues and students so they know where I come from. I think it's important for our students to know our struggles and weaknesses and how we have overcome them.

I grew up on a farm in a small rural community. There were only 20 kids in my HS graduating class! Growing up on a farm taught me hard work; working hard to get the things you want/need. Once I went to college and moved to Texas, I got to see what seemed to me at the time "a whole new world." In meeting new people from different backgrounds than myself, I have learned that it is important to learn from other people, to understand that we are all the same inside. Acceptance and understanding are values I've always had as a Catholic, Those are vales I want help my students develop as well.

Sue Bright-Moore: My third grade teacher probably had the most impact on the way I view my role as a teacher. My father was diagnosed with cancer and died that year. She poured herself into me. When I said I was into acting, she sought out a local children's theater group to come visit our class. She made learning fun and engaging, and her class was a welcome escape from the sadness at home that year.

Experientially, as a GT identified student, I was in very different education settings. In one, my talents were recognized and fostered. However, my family moved to a rural community that really didn't value education as much so I can relate to how the expectations of a community can impact a learner's trajectories and dreams. I hope that my story shows students that you can break out of the expected path and pursue your dreams.

As a former AISD ELL student, I feel that I had a different school experience than that of general education students in the 90's. I always felt different, and growing up I was a little embarrassed of how "Mexican" my family was. As I got older I started to understand that my culture was important, and nothing to be ashamed of, and I wanted other kids like myself to recognize that early on, and not try to assimilate just to fit in and try to be like everyone else. This is a tricky question (but to answer as simply as possible) I can say that my life experiences ARE what has created my role as a writing teacher. My job is to make sure students know how to connect to meaningful memories/learning experiences/as well as a multitude of emotions. When I model how I use "my lens" on how I perceive past situations, I want that to be a learning experience for students to pick up on and practice utilizing. I grew up in a home where anything I really needed was provided for me. My mother supported me, and my dad was more the finances. I have to say I have been blessed many times over in my life. I am the youngest of seven, we lost our mother when I was 1, my oldest sister at 19 took us all in and raised us. She raised us to be brave, loving, empathetic, and to embrace the positive of every situation. I also was blessed to have had the opportunity to be a stay home mom for 34 years. I guess you can say I was a late bloomer to the teaching world, I became a teacher at 50! I am an ovarian cancer survivor, which has made me see the value of life in a whole different way. I wouldn't change anything! My role is to instill self worth, kindness, and love in all my students. I want them to know that when they walk into my classroom that it is a safe haven, they will not be judged, what they have to say is important, they will be challenged, and that the world is their oyster. A life experience that I remember is going through school as a bilingual student not being able to speak English. I was always placed in the corner or in the back of the room. Unfortunately, back then they didn't have a bilingual program and ESL wasn't implemented the way it is now. I told myself that if I ever become a teacher I would definitely become a bilingual teacher to make a change. That was my role.

I disliked all of my math classes in high school until my senior year. All of my previous teachers didn't care about connecting with their students, and we spent the majority of our time working from a textbook. I struggled and considered math to be the worst subject. All of that changed in Mr. Banks' math class. He wasn't your typical textbook teacher; in fact, he was the polar opposite. He attempted to communicate with us, the students. He introduced culture and sports into a math classroom to make the material more enjoyable to learn. That had a huge impact on me, and I began to develop an interest in the subject as a result I decided to major in mathematics and help change how students perceive mathematics in school.

The gift that I bring to the learning environment is the fact that I prefer to work with both ends of the spectrum ranging from co-teach to APA courses. This allows me to work on my pacing, create/ provide different resources to all of the populations that I serve. It allows me to slow down when needed and to enrich for my GT students. I am able to bounce back and forth fluidly and I can adapt as I go.

I have 5 kids in total. Three of which are mine, and 2 step daughters. Our eldest are both GT. One is on the APA track and the other is in the MAP program at Alvin ISD. While my husband and myself have never had to intervene when it comes to schoolwork for our teenagers- it is a very different story for our 7 year old. She is not GT and had struggles academically. I think seeing the different ways that our 3 school aged children learn is rewarding in that none of the three of them learn in the same way. We adapt and mold to fit their style of learning.

If I know there is an area I am weak in- I reach out to colleagues who are more well seasoned than I am. My family was full of strong women. My mother and grandmother were nurturing, but direct. Although, I am intrinsically motivated my mother had high expectations for my sister and I. I was allowed to participate in many extracurricular activities as long as A/B average. Throughout my childhood, I experienced several traumatizing events that some students may not be able to get past.

In my role, I can recognize easily when I child is stressed from their parent's high expectations or being compared to a sibling. I also have a keen eye for identifying students who have experienced a family disruption or abuse. My experiences help me to build a closer relationship and compassion for students dealing with trauma.

The gift that I bring to my learning environment is understanding and building of relationships with my students. From day 1 I open up to my students about my family and I also inquire about theirs. I let them know we are a family in our classroom because we spend so much time together at school, but we are such a HUGE family that we have to have some boundaries. My parents and teachers have always encouraged me to learn as much as I can and always do my best. Although there was no GT program when I was in school, I always performed above grade-level, and my teachers requested that I skip 3rd grade (I had already mastered the entire 3rd grade curriculum by the middle of 2nd grade). I chose not to skip a grade, so instead my teachers allowed me to develop my creativity through reading and writing. Stories I wrote were read during morning announcements at school and sent to Highlight magazines to be published. The encouragement from my teachers is something I always emulate in my classroom. In addition, I have multiple degrees because I believe in being a life-long learner, and always encourage my students to deepen their knowledge base.

My dad finished high school and went straight to work as an oiler with a water company. His hard work and dedication to that company continued for 46 years. He worked his way up the company through the years, eventually serving as interim general manager, then was the Assistant General Manager. He recently retired, and is well respected at GCWA. They just opened a brand new building. They placed his name on the front and dedicated the building in his name. I am strive to be like my dad, dedicated and hard working. My mom also showed me that you can do anything you put your mind to. She began attending college when I was in junior high. She graduated college with her Bachelors in Business the same month I graduated from Alvin HS.

I think overcoming fears and/or obstacles in life, regardless of age and how big/small they are is huge. From a very young age, I knew that I wanted to become a teacher when I grew up because of the love that my teachers instilled in me as a student. But college isn't for everyone and that is ok. I am the youngest of two siblings and the only one in my immediate family to attend college and graduate with an associates, bachelors, and masters degree. But I do have to say that my father is a very successful custom home builder and my brother has a very successful job at the plant making more money that I am. Both attended trade schools and because of that, they are successful. I love that our district has an amazing CT program for those that are not necessarily ready for college and would rather join the work force.

The way I see the world largely came from being a product of an interracial marriage in, along with losing my mom to cancer at 12.

As far as the life experience that has helped to shape the way that I see my role as an educator was probably watching my daughter struggle with math in elementary school. There are many life experiences that created the lens in which I see the world, but I believe that two of most important are growing up in a single parent home and my early childhood education. My mother was a teenage parent, however she was determined to raise my brother and I to be be productive and independent adults. My brother is currently a high school principal and I am a literacy coach. We both hold post graduate degrees. Another important experience in my life, is being introduced to reading. I think that mentality is damaging to them because the situations adults put them in manifest themselves in different ways later in life. I grew up in Chicago and saw things that most kids shouldn't see. I moved to Houston in 2008 to work for an advertising agency. When the company started doing lay-offs, my cohort was the first to go. The lens in which I see the world:
One life experience that created my world lens would be my relationship with my mom. She encouraged me to be myself while simultaneously guiding my character towards her values. Although I do not always live up to her core beliefs and values, they stay with me and make me a better person.

One life experience that created the lens in which I see my role was my 10th grade math TAAS test.
I was in honors classes, but math was the hardest subject for me...and I hated it.
My teacher that year, Coach Brand, taught me to love math.
That year, I was the last student in the whole school working on my state test - this is before time limits!
I went over and over the test looking for mistakes.
When the scores came in, Mr. Brand told the class that 1 person in the school made a 100, and asked who they would guess the student was. Everyone was guessing the usual "smart kids", but it was me.
Because of that day, I have a passion for helping students get over their fear/hatred of math.

My first year was extremely challenging.
Two teachers had quit in the first 6 weeks. Many of the students had an attitude that they were tough, and could make me quit too.
I began by trying to be too nice, and spent the rest of the year struggling to have good management.
Although it was very hard, I could tell that I would love teaching if I could just make it past that first year.
Well, I made it! I learned a lot, and now I get to do something I love every day.

Four years ago, my husband and I started our journey of adopting two children from the foster care system. In a short amount of time, our lives were turned upside. We had no clue what we were getting into. As a result of the last 3 years with our adopted children, I have seen students of trauma through a different lens. To make a long story short, we adopted two very intelligent children who are very much GT, but would never qualify under our system. They are street smart out of the box thinkers that lack in formal educational background knowledge due to being in and out of the foster care system. Living the role of an adoptive parent and loving my children despite the trauma has flipped my life upside down in changed my world perspective in so many ways.

As an adoptive parent and teacher, I believe I have a unique perspective on some of our tougher students, we have lived a lot of their struggles. When I tell people we have adopted older children from foster care, they often say, your story is an inspiration. As adoptive parents and teachers, we don't always feel the inspiration, but we know deep down that every story, even ours inspires someone.
I feel going forward that I can relate and understand what the students are experiencing. With the relationships I build with our tougher students, I can be an advocate for them and show them that there is a path out of their situation.

I was very fortunate enough to have good parents who gave me a great childhood. I have two other brothers, one younger, and one older. I am the middle child. My parents considered me the peace maker. At times their claim was true, but I was also the one who caused trouble.

As a child there were times I acted like a model student, and times when I didn't. I still remember the reasons as to why I chose to do the things I did, and can understand why certain students do what they do. It typically comes from them being bored, not being appreciated by peers and teachers, or something else happening at home. I think it's important to listen to all students when they appear to be acting out because a lot of the times they do not mean to. Listening to my students has helped my students get the proper education they deserve, and also feel appreciated.

The reason why I became a teacher was due to my life experiences. I was inspired by my elementary school teachers who went above and beyond to help me learn and succeed. They cared about my future. Unfortunately, things changed as I made it into high school. Teachers weren't as passionate, and seemed to not care about their students' education. So as a student I didn't care. After high school it was very difficult for me to start seriously thinking about my future. I had to think about who believed in me to succeed which were my parents, and elementary school teachers.

I think believing in others, the social contract, and building relationships goes a long way because ultimately that is what inspired me to become who I am today.

What life experiences created the lens in which you see the world? Your role?

I started my education at a private school in Houston. At this private school, I was allowed to move through topics based on my interests and at my own pace. Because of this, I excelled at math because I wasn’t confined to just working on material based on my current grade level. In third grade, I moved to public schools in Pearland. I was quickly classified as a GT student, but looking back, I didn’t get what I needed in this regard. I became an “underground” gifted student because I wanted to fit in with others. I started to slack off and not live up to my full potential. I didn’t have anyone pushing me and I was too naive to realize that I needed to push myself. In high school, a few of my teachers realized it and pushed me to be better in their classes, but my other teachers just thought I was lazy and didn’t care to challenge me. I finally realized my full potential during the last two years of my undergrad journey and was able to be my most successful and productive self. As a result of these combined experiences, I look for my younger self in my students and help them be their best selves.

I have had many life experiences that have allowed me to see the world how I do. I come from a family that could not afford to send me to college so I joined the Army. Then I was injured and had to be medically discharged. I went to SFA, then became a mom. When Hurricane Harvey hit we lost our house and had to move into an apartment that caught on fire 6 months later. My daughter has ADHD and ASD. My life has not been a bed of roses but it has taught me that you have to look deeper than the surface with people. You never know what people are going through. I have also learned that people put up walls to protect themselves from hurt or disappointment, as educators it is not our job to knock them down, it is however our job to help the students feel safe enough to let them down.

oof... every experience in my life has played a factor in how I see the world. I am the youngest of three children in what was at one time, in my mind, the 80's version of the Cleavers. Since both my brothers were quite a bit older, I became more of an only child when my parents separated in the mid-80's do to my father's alcoholism. The addition of unsupervised time, moving year-to-year, and ultimately a less than appropriate step-father some years later led me to be become more of a difficult/angsty teen (outside of school) in the 90's and finally a mother at a very young age. I was in all advanced/honors classes and on the path to medical school when I graduated so needless to say the situation was very difficult for my mother to handle especially when I went with the unpopular opinion to have the baby and get married. I had two teachers that supported my decision. They took me shopping to buy a wedding dress, but never treated me any differently. My husband and I have been together for 30 years and now have three children and three grandchildren. My life has been a rollercoaster from Cleavers (lower middle class) to a single parent home (upper lower class) to a blended family (upper middle class) to teen parents (low-income) to grandparents (middle class). While I haven't seen everything, I've seen a ton and I try to use my personal experiences as a reminder to be open-minded and non-judgmental. We don't know what others are going through and we all respond differently because of our past experiences.

The most significant life experiences that created my optimistic lens of the world is my childhood growing up in the USA as an immigrant from the Philippines, my supportive family, and my drive in theatre -- one of my favorite hobbies. I say "person" first because were oftentimes told to find our mold or role in our communities and lead fiercely in them early on, but I like to emphasize to my students that they have room to explore who they are and want to be both within the world of reading and writing or beyond. The life experiences that created the lens in which to see the world were growing up in a number of schools where we were small in number, but had teachers that help us learn more than what was in the books/lessons. They tied the learning to more than what was on the page, connected it to real world experiences and allowed us to work together to achieve more. They allowed us to ask questions, to try and experiment learning in different ways. There are more than one way to solve problems, and my teachers allowed me to try many different ways. I have learned from failure, I have learned from success. All experiences have brought me to where I am today. I am guiding these kids to the answer, not just telling them what the answer is.

My mother and father divorced when I was four and I moved in with my mother and brother. My dad was a hero in my eyes and it took 15 years to realize that may not be the case. My mom was a teacher making about 3K in the 70's while raising 2 kids and going to get her masters degree. Spanish is my first language. Growing up, family members/ friends who mastered English would sometimes laugh when I made a mistake. That made me self-conscious of my accent or the mistakes I made. Because of this, I was embarrassed to speak English. I later realized that mastering two languages ( even with a slight accent) is far more impressive than laughing at someone for trying to learn and master a new language. When I was a teenager, I went to the Amazon during my Summer School to visit my grandfather who had businesses in the capital. I was passionate to learned about the indigenous and the experiences to go to the jungle.

One day I went to the market and I met this group of indigenous kids that I fell in love with. One of the things that broke my heart was that none of them knew how to read because the school was far away from their villages.

That day, I decided to go to the market every week and teach them how to read. That experience change my life forever and since that moment, I decided to bring and share my knowledge with others who have less opportunities to learn.

I LOVE reading books. For years at the end of the day, I read the Junie B series to the class. I often am upfront with my students about my experiences. I tell them about my childhood without a father and about the mother that helped build me. I also tell them, "if you don't learn a single other thing in my class, you will learn that you are loved." Some experience that have created the lens in which I see the world are coming from a large family, living and visiting abroad, being a parent, and being educated in a different country/school system. I have encountered and interacted with many different cultures and many different people (hello fourth child out of six kids with differing personalities).
