The pipeline is a 1172 mile long underground oil pipeline in the United States. The construction began back in 2016 during the Obama administration. Then it would connect North Dakota which is oil rich and take it to Illinois. According to available data, the pipeline lost less than 4 barrels of oil during its first six months in operation versus roughly 61.25 million barrels transported during the same period of time.

the pipeline will go through 4 states, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois. The pipeline would also run through some of the Standing Rock Sioux and could potently block their water way. This has brought many arguments onto why the pipeline should not be built. Arguments for it is that if the pipeline was built, then it would make 470,000 barrels of oil a day from the oil fields of western North Dakota to Illinois. Although most of the jobs won't last and the only needed workers are those to maintain the pipeline and monitor it

The pipeline has both positives and negatives. One major positive is that it would move 470,000 barrels of oil a day. It would also create 8,000 to 12,000 construction jobs. It would also pump millions of dollars into local economies. On the other hand tho there are also negatives. One large problem is the chance that the pipe may rupture and cause a very large leak and cause tons of damage to the environment around it. Another negative is that it will be going through the Standing Rock Sioux land and they have experienced getting their land taken before. It has also interfered with the farmers lands in Iowa. Many of the farmers do not want the pipeline in their farms.

Under the Obama administration, including the Army Corps of Engineers, the Department of Justice and the Department of Interior they chose to temporarily block the construction of the pipeline. They were hoping on conducting a new review over the land but a federal court intervened and allowed the building to continue. President Obama said at a white house event for tribal leaders that he wants to make their voices heard.
The Trump administration has approved the final permit to allow the pipeline to be built. Trump owns stock in the Energy Transfer Partners. So he is more into getting the pipeline completed.

The pipeline hadn't had much protesting until it reached one crossing of the Missouri River. Just south of that crossing is where the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation is located. This has been the main cause for all the protesting. The construction has the pipeline going Running under a Missouri River reservoir called Lake Oahe. The Sioux believe that the Government is violating their tribal treaties about their reservation. They also say that the construction will ruin some of their sacred sites around the lake. Also building the pipeline under the lake would jeopardized the primary source of water for the reservation. But after the 6 months of legal fighting, the Trump administration revised the decision by the Obama administration. That decision allowed the company, Energy Transfer Partners, to drill under Lake Oahe and finish building the last section of the pipeline.

I believe that the pipeline is a good idea. It will create new jobs and help the economy. It will create and estimated 8,000 to 12,000 jobs to build it and the construction will add 129 million in tax revenue in local and state economy. The pipeline will also help the US. to become more energy independent because we will be able to produce our own oil and wont have to buy it from foreign countries. Lastly the pipeline will make transporting the oil from North Dakota to major refining markets safer, more cost effective, and more environmentally friendly. It will also reduce the carbon footprint transporting the oil without using trucks. These are reasons why I believe it will be good.
