These are some pictures I came across while I was scrolling on Pinterest. As for my zine, I wanted to explore love and the color pink. These are elements that have been roaming around my head, and I'm grateful that I came upon these elements. As for the zine, since valentine's day is coming up I wanted to showcase concepts of love, cute trinkets, and my journey of love!

I had a plan in mind and decided to research. First, I always thought of trinkets as very lovely and fitting in with the concept of love. For example, I am always collecting cherubs, moncchichis, precious moment figures, vintage mirrors, prints, and more. Which is why, I decided to include kissing figures that shows deep sincere love.

I went down in a rabbit hole when it came to researching as I came across pink images with photographs/figures on them. I added these to my moodboard since it gave me inspo for possible layout options and what I'll include in my own zine. As for colors, I would like to explore different shades of pink and a sense of gradient with pastel colors. Lastly, the black and creme patterned mirror, is an approach I would like to explore since I believe that adding pattern can be eye catching and flirty as well!

I found this on Pinterest while scrolling! This immersive design book caught my attention with the big eyeball in the center. As well as the type that goes around the book, but what was really attention grabbing was the cut-out of the book. The layout has me curious about each panel and how the type connects to the overall feel of the book. Lastly, the smooth colors in the book really bring out the feel of it as the palm and eye reels me in to learn more.

I found this website while digging to find immersive design experiences, this in particular caught my attention with the website and the very 90's look. This interactive memoir in a 90's style features mini-games and narrations based on Jackie Liu's childhood. It tells a story of memories and growing up. What I found really delicate was the efforts made in this interactive experience with the room tour and the nostalgia of a child's room. It made me think back of my childhood room and the many trinkets that occupied my space.

I was trying to think of immersive design experiences and remembered a unique experience I had when this Van Gogh exhibition was on displayed in NYC. Being able to be apart of the painting was eye opening and left me in awe. What caught my eye was the intimacy involved in this experience, as the dark lighting was present, but the lighting from the artwork really showcased the intimate experience. The reflective surfaces onto people's faces caught my attention as it created the scene of being intimate with Van Gogh's pieces.

When researching this, I came across it on Behance, since it’s filled with lots of interesting work. I thought the zine was really cute and unique, but lacking something eye catching. Below, is my process of the sketches and what I was thinking to make this zine “better.” First I took a look at the type and images, in my opinion, the images are too square and there was a lot of empty space. I wanted the zine to be eye catching and provide a sense of oomph! To me it looked like a normal book layout. My thought process consisted of adding large elements of Studio Ghibli characters, bigger type, switching up the images, and filling up the empty spaces. I started with looking at images of Totoro, who's a famous character in the Studio Ghibli world. I wanted to draw attention to Totoro since it really captures the overall theme of the zine.

On the bottom, I placed this sketch of Totoro I did at the top-left corner. I want to draw attention to these characters in an intriguing manner! I played around with the placement and finally decided to place it there with a diagonal angle. As for the type, I believed that in the original, it was too boring/plain. I wanted long ascenders when it came to type, filling up the empty spaces and adding personality to the fun theme of Studio Ghibli.

My two ways for enhancing this zine show sketches of enlarging the Studio Ghibli characters to show emphasis on the style of this theme and the fun large type to showcase. Either approach would be beneficial! Something that bothered me heavily, was the placement of the images on the pages, to me, it would be useful to switch it up. To make it more immersive, I suggested cutting up the images, making it in a collage style to give the images some personality.

I found this zine on Behance and the colors caught my eye! The skateboarding is something that caught my attention as it brought in an interesting perspective on skating. Even though the layout is well constructed and immersive, there is always room for more. Below are my sketches and thought process when constructing these sketches. I was stuck on this zine, since I was unsure how to make it more immersive and give it that oomph! I believe type is important when it comes to zine's, not only does it bring attention to the viewer, but it helps making the piece much more interesting and fun. As for my process, I went between figuring out what to do and sketching it out.

I knew I wanted to add dimension with the type and expand some elements. Below are the placement layouts that are sketched out. I enjoyed the vintage filter the zine has, as well as the layout being perceived as construction paper. I made it clear to put emphasis on the Nike shoes, and type. I worked around the linework that was displayed in the original zine, I believed it showcases an indication of skating trail marks. I continued this process on the zine, and switched up the format in the second example.

To me, switching up the placement was an idea that came up since I wanted to put attention on the type and the Nike shoes, with the "skate marks" being displayed throughout the page and underneath the shoes. As well as creating a diagonal type placement to add in that oomph when talking about skateboarding. In skateboarding there are a lot of tricks and curves, the diagonal text made sense to add in the sense of a fun sport as it went along the format of the curves and constructed page.

As for the "STREET" type I wanted to having some sort of effect on this since the bold dark type can grasp the reader, the echo of the type was bold enough for me to add in the sketch. Overall, I focused on placement, type, enlarging images, and line work.

I loved this zine because it was a bunch of images the artist found worth talking about. I especially enjoyed the colors as it was pleasing and gave the option to create a sense of unity and peace. When looking at this zine, I noticed that it was too organized, I wanted some sort of odd placement and to create a sense of rhythm. I did not have any issues when sketching out my ideas, all I knew was that I wanted to expand the elements and the "perfect" placement of the cups in the second image needed to be fixed.

In the second sketch, I expanded the text on the left and the image on the right, it's important for these visuals to be all up in your face. Not only does it show the detail, but it creates room for inviting the viewer into the artists space. As for the first piece, the organization of the cups were "too perfect" and to me, enlarging the glass of water was the approach I took since "its in perfect health."

It creates this playful joke of the glass being perfect and hence should receive all the attention than the bottom glass. As well as changing the diagonal text to show "the distress cup" the juxtaposition made me laugh and shows how immersive design can be playful, fun, and funny at the same time.

As for the collage, I once again went on Pinterest, similar to the moodboard I had in mind. I researched the type of images I would be adding in the collage. When thinking about type, this was a process since I wanted script but also wanted some sort of sans-serif typeface in my work. So, this was a process and would take trial and error!

Essentially, this was the draft that was born out of my research, brain, and effort. Again, there's always room for edits and playing around with it. I was satisfied with it so far, but the real truth came when I would decide to print and see it in person. As for the layout, I decided on a lowercase sans-serif Futura because it seemed more on the calmer side. This would make up the front and back cover! As for the insides, this is the part that was troubling since I was sure I had messed up the formant (which would come true when I printed it out). Essentially, I believe the message I want to convey is prominent with all the elements that are included. As shown, I decided to showcase the script of what can Love be, essentially anything! How it surrounds us all over the universe, using stars to show this. Along with the organic layout as mentioned earlier and the collage!

For this zine draft, I wanted to capture type and sketches, similar to my Pinterest moodboard. I already had sketches in mind with the conjoined bunnies, and what love is in my mind. I portrayed this through cute sketches of what love can be, how it can be anything, and how it surrounds us. I'm thinking of adding some assets such as flowers, or anything that deals with nature. I also wanted to add in some sounds? I'm still thinking about it, but whatever is available I’ll try to make it work. First, I’ll start off with playing around on Blippar, to test out the waters and try to be involved in what the program offers. Next, based on my theme I have nature in mind, that way the viewer can be interacting with my zine. For the third spread, I would like to play around with the collage and make it interactive as well.
Project Reflection

Overall, this project started off with brainstorming in class. As I researched the different zones, I realized that it all dealt with identity/hobbies/and anything that was in interest for the designer. Essentially, I wanted to cover the topic of love since Valentine’s Day was coming up and it’s a subject that many encounter in different ways. Either if it’s a person, a feeling, a thing, a song, a look, or anything. I wanted to cover this concept in the cliche way of red and the cliche Valentine’s Day decoration. As I designed the zine I had sketches, edits, ideas, that came into life at the end.

In class, I was exploring Blippar and wanted to become familiar with the program and what it offered. I can across some assets that went along with my theme. Essentially, I wanted to explore the flowers for the two pages of the conjoined bunnies to showcase the bunnies in a flower field. But, soon changed to the front and back cover as they were already interacting. As I was researching, I always appreciated a good flower field with wild animals running around, which is why I wanted to highlight the flowers in the interactive experience. To add on, I also added in some music to really reel in the viewer of a flower field as the sounds consisted of a spring field with birds and nature sounds. This really captured the concept of the image I was going for.

As for the collage, I had seen that Blippar had fun assets of heart balloons, flowers, and animation. Again, wanted to explore the cliche love decoration so decided to decorate the experience with balloons and flowers, as for the animation the balloon are bouncing to really capture the idea of balloons, while the flowers fade in the scene. I had started by sketching out the concept and deciding the placement of it as well.

While completing the AR experience, this took a lot of trim and error since I would play around with the placement and would decide the scale. I would test these, to make sure it satisfied the experience and if it met my expectations.

As for the strongest elements, I would include the assets and the sound. I appreciated how the assets went hand-in-hand with my theme and the concept I was trying to explore. Like always, there is always room for improvement. I would improve on adding in more interactive elements, since I’m not too familiar with the program, I wanted to explore this further one in the future. Since, I wanted the zine work to stand out, the minimal elements were enough for me.

With this project, I learned how to properly document my work and it’s okay to showcase the errors while being in the process. I faced challenges with placement as I was working on the zine. But, it gave me a new way of thinking since I was able to learn how I got my work done, my thinking process, and really capture the process of Blippar.

As for the sounds and visual, I wanted to point out the obvious, and make it interesting but easy for the user. The shapes on the mask like the swirls, lines, whiskers, droplets, will indicate each nature sound when the user clicks on these elements.
