         <description><![CDATA[<div>It stand for Global Maritime Distress and Safety System, is designed to transmit maritime distress and safety camunications everywhere in the world.<br>It leaves no “shadow areas” and it's based on a combination between INMARSAT and radio system.<br>It was introduced in '98 and became operative in '99. <br>The purpose is to ensure the immediate reception of any distress signal transmitted by a ship, either by authorities ashore or by a near vassels.<br>There are shore based MRCC (Maritime Rescure and Coordination Centre)and Coast Radio Station can assist SAR</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>GMDSS regulations estabished that  since 1999 all passenger ships engaged on international voyages, and all cargo ship of 300 GT and above must carry a number of different radio system for transmitting a safety and distress alarm.<br>This variety of system ensures that the distress alarm signal containing the ship's position and distress will be recived by shore rescue authorities or other vassels.<br>GMDSS ships are required to carry the following equipment:<br>•Radio installation transmitting DSC<br>•SART (SAR Trasponder)<br>•VHF transceinvers<br>•NAVTEX receivers<br>•INMARSAT ECG receivers<br>•EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon)</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>GMDSS divides the world in 4 sea areas:<br>1. Sea area A1 lies within the telephone coverage of least on VHF coast station. This is an area within 20 to 30 NM from the coast. Ships wre obliged to have VHF installation capable to transmitting and receiving ship-to-shore distress alerts on CH 13, 16 and DSC on CH 70.<br>2. Sea area A2 lies within the radiotelphone coverage of at least MF. This is an area approximately within 100-150 MN and is request to carry a MF radio installation for voice and DSC.<br>3. Sea area A3 lies within fhe coverage of INMARSAT geostationary satellite, in which continous alerting is available. Therefore ships navigating in this area over 150 NM from the coast between 70°N and 70°S, must be provided with an INMARSAT Earth Station capable of :<br>•transmitting and receiving distress  and safety comunications;<br>•initiating and receiving distress priority calls;<br>•manteing watch for shore-ship distress alert.<br>Carry the same installatipn of areas A1 and A2. In addiction, they should have radio telex, for recepition of MSI.<br>4. Sea area A4 is named polar regions. Ship require a radio installation HF for long range alerting.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>NAVTEX is used to broadcast Maritime Safety Informations (MSI), distress and safety calls, weather reports of navigational warnings transmitted every 4 hours in English. <br>EPIRB is a buoy fitted with radio system which transmits ship's identity, position and alarm call on 406 MHz, it's connected with satellites and land stations. <br>SART (SAR Transponder) is used in lifeboats. Indicates on other ship's radars the position of the SART.<br>AIS-SART is a portable version of AIS with GPS devices.<br>Portable VHF transceivers allow communications with various and lifeboats.<br>Narrow Band Direct Printing (NBPD) is the new radio telex for broadcast MSI in area A4</div>]]></description>
