Women in ancient Greece were regarded as secondary citizens, their responsibilties were to their homestead, raising their children, and weaving. Women had fewer rights than men, however, the treatment of women varied from city-state to city-state.

The rules for working women were more vague, and applied less strictly. Some women worked in shops, as prostitutes, and courtesans, known as hetairas. Despite this very few women were respected to the same level as their male counterparts, although some women, against all odds, rose in popularity and became respected members of society. Some examples are; Sappho of Lesbos - a poet, Arete of Cyrene - a philosopher, Gorgo of Sparta and Aspasia of Athens - leaders, and Agnodice of Athens - a physician.

Women had few legal rights, they generally could not own property or vote and were also not allowed to participate in the government. Women were expected to manage the household, managing slaves, resources and the education of their children. When married they were known as the kyria, translating to noble lady.

Young girls were raised by nursemaids and spent most of their time in the gynaikon- the women's quarters of a household, located on the upper floors.

Young women were allowed to collect water from communal wells, allowing them to socialise and interact with other women

Women participated in religious rites and rituals, and some were reserved for young women. Young girls were chosen to serve the Goddess Artemis in her sanctuary at Braunon. They were called 'little bears', and acted as wild animals which would be 'tamed' by marriage. Therefore, young women grew up with deeply engrained values and a clear perception of their role in society as mothers and wives

The Depiction of Women in Mythology

Hestia and Dionysus - Hestia, goddess of hearth and home, was one of the original 6 of Kronos' kin. She was one of the most important goddesses and maintained balance on Olympus by keeping the split of gods to goddesses equal. However, when Zeus' son, Dionysus, was born, Hestia relinquished her throne to prevent the gods from waging war within themselves. This representation of women being dutiful peace-keepers reflects how they were treated in society.

Persephone and Hades - Persephone, Daughter of Zeus and Demeter, was abducted by Hades who fell madly in love with her, and brought to the underworld. Peresphone's mother Demeter created a famine over the earth in her sorrow while searching for her daughter. Eventually, Zeus convinced Hades to allow Persephone to return to the land of the living for 6 months of the year. This story conveys the way women were seen as of their husbands' property.

Although women were not respected in society to the same degree as men, in mythology, they were revered and held a prominent place throughout Greece
