Read through Merit and Excellence exemplars. What have they focused on? How do they link their writing back to the big question? What kind of language do they tend to use?

Both merit and excellence identify the specific processes and media used to create the piece and how this use of media communicated the artists meaning. However I found the difference between the Merit and Excellence exemplars is that the excellence exemplar very clearly communicated how the media and process were used to enhance the meaning of the artwork. The merit exemplar does communicate this but the connection isn't highlighted as much as in the excellence

In the merit piece, she points out what the artist used in the painting and how they did it, but the excellence exemplar went more in depth and proceeded to say how it effected the painting e.g “The use of glazes in dark areas or shadow is effective, and creates a deep space”.

The Low M is inconsistent in the discussion of art works. David (Michelangelo) is very light on details which drags the essay response down a bit. School of Athen (Raphael) and Bacchus and Ariadne far more detailed and at more of a merit level. Student does a good job of evaluating all three art works.

Merit
Grounds discussion of context in specific details from the art work. (marking schedule talks about using supporting evidence. This should primarily be examples from the artwork and then backed up by quotes and pertinent facts. Talks about all 3 artworks quite consistently and in a great deal of detail.

Keeps to the question asked by the standard: What are the media and process and how do they impact on style and meaning?
