Fenty Beauty was an important milestone in the makeup industry.  Fenty Beauty was launched in 2017 by the infamous Rihanna. The basis of this makeup line was to provide inclusivity across various skin tones. In 2017, Tart Beauty came out with a foundation line that only had seven skin tones available. Shortly after this Fenty Beauty was launched that included 50 shades of foundation. Rihanna launching such an inclusive base brand, sparked conversation about the lack of diversity most makeup brands had. The outcome  of Rihanna launching 50 shades, showed  that black women are only normally offered 2 to 3 shades when they pick out their foundation color. The reality of this is that black women have several different ranges of skin tones. There is no such thing as one size fits all when it comes to skin tone. Often there is a wide range of color for white people, and often black women are left to adjust. Rihanna coming out with her brand completely shifted the tone of what color range is acceptable for a makeup brand. It showed that inclusivity ranges far, and it should not be considered inclusive just because a couple black shades are available. Inclusivity means all shades of black are available, and Rhianna set the tone for this. Anita Hill spoke out regarding sexual-harassment she experiences while  Clarence Thomas was her supervisor. This is such an important artifact of women’s pop culture for several reasons. For one, a woman speaking against a male in a power position is tough on its own. It leaves room for vulnerability and ridicule because of what comes with speaking out against a male figure. What made this artifact specifically an iconic moment, was that not only was it women versus male, but it was a black women speaking out against a black male, who was getting covered by a multitude of white men. Although this case had a lot of inconsistencies within the court and a lack of evidence, they used Amanda's sexuality as a weapon within the case. Headlines started with different narratives of what happened that night of the murder.
Different covers labeled her in a sexual way. Headlines surfaced, such as “Foxy Knoxy. “Other covers spun the story into a false narrative that she and her boyfriend were having a threesome with her roommate and then decided to kill her, out of jealousy. The judge and lawyers went with this narrative that was being spun in the media, and convinced the public that Amanda Knox was a crazy wild girl , and therefore she was vindictive and capable of murder.  Something that stuck out to me while reading about this case was the word jealousy. That is such a common term for women because they  are “crazy “. The reality is that jealousy is not something every woman is capable of , although it is heavily stigmatized that it is in a woman's nature to be jealous and crazy.

What people often forget is that the man who pledged guilty was never publicized or exposed in the media. Amanda Knox was the better story to tell. She was easy to sexualize because she was a woman; it became an extraordinary story,  not a trial. She was just a foreigner in that country and they took her lack of fluency in Italian , gender, and body language as a sign of being a murderer. I think that this is a really important story to look back on regardless of what actually happened. Instead of focusing on the poor girl who was brutally murdered, the media focused on a “sex crazy girl “they claimed to be a murderer. They sexualized her in the media because they could, because she is a woman. This is wrong. This would’ve never been publicized the way it had,  had only men been involved. It shows that the media values potential “crazy women “more than vindictive men. I find the story to be really disheartening but a really good point in history for women who speak out against sexual assault. Anita Hill only spoke out against Clarence Thomas when she was approached , once he was appointed to the Supreme Court. She did not write an “expose”. Anita spoke out because a man guilty of sexual-harassment was being put in an extreme power position in America, so she felt it was her civil duty to say something.  Almost 30 years later judge Clarence Thomas is still on the Supreme Court.
