It can be condensed down to a fraction of the time whilst still containing the same message. The homily can also go off topic from what was being said in the Gospel. This isn't a huge issue however, the amount of time used up due to unnecessary information drags the mass on for too long. I feel like the extra time save could be used for confession at the end of the mass.
