1983 - 1990

In 1983 from Motorola, this cell phone cost $4000 USD. In 1989 Motorola with the 9800X or MicroTAC, it came with a fold down keyboard cover and set the standard for the flip phone form factor seen throughout the 90's.

This cell phone marked an important step in the world of technology, because this was the first ever portable mobile phone. And this surely brought great advantages to the people who had access to one.

1991 - 1994

From GSM in Europe 1991, it was the first to market, but on sale for business use until 1992. Nokia was one of the first to take advantage of this transition, with the Nokia 1011 arriving that year.

This cell phone became an important gadget to every one how can afford it, and I say this because even tough this cell phone was available for the public, this were very expensive and not anyone could afford one of this. But for the persons how can this became very functional to their lives and business.

1995 – 1998

In 1997 and the first one with color, it offered four colors. The same year Hagenuk launched the GlobalHandy, the first device without an external aerial. Then Ericcson offering swappable coloured front keyboard panels. The following year Nokia launched a range of ‘Xpress-on’ interchangeable covers on the 5100 series, making it the first fashion orientated phone.

Even tough fashion for phones don't sound very important, it is because this started to introduce cell phones as something that can be different depending on the persons taste. Thing that know is very common.

1999 – 2002

In 1999 this was the first one to use WAP (accessing information over a mobile wireless network). A year later Sharp launched the world's very first camera phone, the J-SH04. But in 2002 Sony Ericsson T68i and its clip-on camera, made western markets started to take an interest in the camera phone.

The evolution to this phone is very impressing, becase this cell phone was the first multifunctional phone, thing that mean that phones change from something to just communicate to a gadget that can also work as a camera, a radio, a GPS... This phone was a little bit closer to what we use as cell phones now days.

BlackBerry

2003 – 2006

in March 2003 RIM brought mobile email to the masses with its range of popular BlackBerry devices like the 8100 Pearl. The advent of front facing cameras in 2003 on devices such as the Sony Ericsson Z1010 meant video calling became possible, but not popular.

I think email and video calling are some really useful and popular functions now days, and for me is impressing how then they were not a big thing.

iPhone

2007 – 2010

In May 2007, The LG Prada being the first touchscreen to market ahead of the Apple iPhone. Apple proved to have both the stronger brand and superior knowledge of capacitive touchscreen's potential.

I think the touchscreen was also a big step in cell phones, and also a step forward to what we know and use now.
