We're all just consumers of the internet now - global clones
Text Type: Blog

Internet Consumer habits and the role of tech giants
August 3, 2021
Haddiyya Wardhani Nugroho

In this digital age, the internet has become one of the most rapidly developed global systems with continual growth by providing innumerable advanced services and access to various information. According to datareportal.com, internet users are currently growing at an annual rate of 5.7 percent, equating to an average of more than 700,000 new users each day. From that statistics alone, it is well known that users and usage of the internet has experienced a considerable increase over the past years.

The rise of internet consumers has surely had its benefits; With most of our daily activities sourced through the internet, users can efficiently complete tasks and have everything they need compact into one global system-- the internet. It is no wonder that internet users are continuously increasing and are predicted to do so in many years to come.

Having large groups of people being exposed to the internet does provide a fair share of negative impacts. It is proven that excessive time on the internet can increase a teenager's risk of high blood pressure. Research has shown a link between heavy internet usage and increased health risks such as internet addiction, anxiety, depression, obesity, and social isolation. Certainly, moderation is key-- the internet has been extremely integrated into our daily lives, and it is simply difficult to detach the internet without risking our priorities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed greatly to the rise of internet users, as daily essentials (work, education, communication) are done through the internet; detaching the internet from our daily lives is simply impossible. In addition, younger generations are exposed to internet usage at a very young age. Social networks allow young people to connect and organise like never before; Having this efficiency restricts us to explore beyond the internet and prevents us from building crucial skills that cannot be obtained through the internet. Hence, more and more people are increasing internet usage, raising the concern that we're all just consumers of the internet now - global clones. Surely, the lack of moderation causes the consumers to be too dependent on the internet, but it isn’t the main root of the problem.

When billions of consumers are experiencing a shared struggle of internet moderation, it is safe to say that the concern should target its producers. All tech giants have a platform business model that connects suppliers to consumers. By their nature, platform businesses benefit from network effects – the more consumers you acquire, the more appealing you are to suppliers. Tech giants have considerable power and influence towards consumers, and many internet users aren’t aware of the dangers. In order to attract these consumers, tech giants implement addictive factors that disrupt consumers’ ability to control internet usage. Aside from addicting users, technology is contributing toward so-called “continuous partial attention”, severely limiting people’s ability to focus, and possibly lowering IQ.

Controlling consumer behaviour is unrealistic when it comes to going against what the platform was designed to become-- addictive. As big tech companies, it is ethically irresponsible to prioritize consumer quantity over consumers’ wellbeing. As internet users are continuously increasing, tech giants have to make responsible ethical decisions that separate consumers from harm. The internet can open doors to great opportunities and knowledge; When misused, its effects are harmful. As consumers, moderation and awareness should always be prioritized in order to fulfil your well-being needs. As big tech giants, large companies have the power to influence billions-- use it for good.

text type: personal blog

Which Is Most Important? Family? Country? Or Others?

Aug 1, 2021

When it comes to choosing what matters most in our lives, it may differ from one person to another. Between family, hometown, country, language, and species, some people may choose family, some may choose country, and so on. All that depends on one’s culture, experience, and perspectives. But then again, do we really have to choose between all those things? Well, here’s what I think of this matter.

So, what is it that I deem most important? If I truly have to choose, I would choose my family, as I deem them most important above all others. Then, you might be wondering if the other things mentioned above were not important to me. Well, you guess wrong. I deem my family as the most important thing in my life, which to an extent includes my hometown, country, language, and species. You may find yourself wondering again, “How so?”. Don’t fret, you’ll find out shortly.

First thing first, I want to talk about the reason why I chose family. My family is the only constant thing in my life, who I know would never abandon me. They’ve always been there for me, though they might not be the most perfect family there is. Keep in mind, when I say family, I’m talking about my parents only, as I don’t have any siblings and I’m not close with my other relatives. All my other relatives live in other cities across Java, while only my parents and I live in Jakarta.

From my explanation in the previous paragraph, I believe you might have drawn a conclusion about how my hometown is almost just as important as my parents. I’ve lived here my whole life with just my parents. Next, as for my country and language, they’re of course important to a certain extent. Indonesia and its native language are important to me because both my parents are Indonesian and we use Bahasa Indonesia for our daily communication. Although, my parents mostly speak in Javanese to themselves. Lastly, species is certainly important, as all of us are humans.

So, yes, my family is first and foremost to me and the other things that make us who we are, come close in second. But then again, we don’t really have to choose or rank which one is most important and which one is least important. As implied before, I believe that family, hometown, country, language, and species are correlated to each other, hence the insignificance of choosing.

Chosen Text Type: Letter to Editor
Context: A recently released article used a statement about the public's consumption habits of the internet, and a young activist decides that the statement seemed insensitive.
Prompt: (5) We're all just consumers of the internet now - global clones

Dear, Editor

A recently published article on globalisation, the global market and reoccurring global trends in context of the pandemic we are faced with, last week sparked my interest of conversation. A compelling statement "We're all just consumers of the internet now - global clones" led to a lengthy thought that I would like to express over this short letter. I interpreted this statement as both negative and positive as I partially agree but also disagree with the statement.

As a member of a southeast asian online activist community ThePioneerGroup I felt the need to be objective with my judgement of this statement. The definition of consumer refers to people that purchase or use certain products, this of course is depending on whether the product must be attained by price or without. The internet is one of many globally used products that happens to be partially free for use. When using the word partial referring to the internet, this still is defined as a large number. It's become a modern norm that people should have access to the internet, that numerous job requirements or educational requirements uses the internet. Walking into a mall or a cafe, especially places with a free internet connection, you could be met with many people on their electronic device and on the internet, even children under the age of 5. This norm of course as one of the indicators that a very large amount of people "consume" the internet, either as a requirement or a form of entertainment. This part of the statement must be agreed with as a person involved in the majorly modern human experience.

Although I must disagree with the word "all" and referencing "all" people as "global clones." An intended hyperbole, or not. I felt that generalising people who use the internet was insensitive to the variety of socio-economic classes, which often affects people's abilities to even have access to the internet. Various people who still live in more rural areas may still not have the same amount of, or even any access to internet usage, or some people even purposely choose to stay away from using the internet as they do not deem it a need. Moreover, "global clones" felt non-intersectional as if the mobility of internet usage also does not have to do with socio-economic classes and where people live, which in reality is a very significant reason why there are large gaps between people's abilities to optimise the internet.

I feel that there must have been more socially aware diction to use when expressing what this sentence meant. As a renowned media page I'm sure there are readers of this publishing company from various parts of the world (as part of their internet consumption.) I felt that to be respectful to all readers there could be an improvement in how you choose to express your ideas in your articles.

Thank You,

Dita Anjayani
ThePioneerGroup Organization.

Text Type: Blog
What Matters The Most?

August 3rd 2021

Ainaa Dewi Faadila

“Which matters most to you? your family, your hometown, your country, your language, your species... Or do you really have to choose?” today I read this tweet on twitter and it raised more questions than answers for me. However, reading this statement left a lot of thoughts on what I think matters in life, and I’m sharing it with my blog readers as maybe you’ll find your answer to that statement from reading this and you will be able to see for yourself what matters to you.

The statement brought up family, hometown, country, language, and species. It would be hard to choose which one matters the most as all of them matter to me. My family is the people closest to me, the people who raised me, the people who constantly encourage me to grow, and the people I love most. My country is where I’ve been living my whole life, my country is where all the people I love belong, and my country has allowed me to be a part of a culture that has shaped a huge part of who I am today. Language is what allows me to connect with people, language is how I express myself and language has opened me to so many different cultures. My species is what I am, a human being, and other humans matter as we need each other to help and care for one another.

Reflecting on what those five things mean to me, made me realize that we don’t have to choose, at some point in our lives may be family is the most important or your country is more important but then we see how it changes every time, and it never sticks to only one being the most mattered one. You need language to be able to connect with the people in your country, your family, everyone else, and you need your family to even become human. All of those five things need each other, therefore, it all matters.

From my previous points, I have emphasized how all those five things are meaningful in life, they can't work without the other and we require each and every one of them. All those things may have a different meaning to you and we don’t have to choose, what matters to everyone is different, but while we are here it is important to look back on those five things as it is a part of us.
