Intro to Single Notes

The use of single notes throughout music is vital when making a song that will be remembered. In Ben Ratliff's book "Every Song Ever" he discusses the use of single notes through different eras and how they have impacted music. "But with a single note you have authenticity, because nobody else has played the single note exactly the same way" (page 72, chp. 6) this quote helps to explain why artists chose to use single notes throughout their music. Using single notes help listeners identify a specific song because it gives the song an original trademark.

Why I agree with Ratliff

After reading this chapter I totally agree with Ratliff and why the use of single notes can be a key element in music. "[The] series of the same note over and over acknowledges melody and rhythm and harmony." (page 71, chp. 6) this quote emphasizes just how important single notes are. Single notes highlight various elements throughout a song like the melody and different tempo changes since the listener is able to detect the consistency of the single note throughout a song.

Throughout Drake's song "Furthest Thing" he centers his verses around the same B note. Being able to identify this note throughout the song gives the rhythm a constant sound that the listener would be able to identify anywhere.

Throughout the song "Dumb Stuff" there is a constant beat from the drums that can be heard distinctively throughout the song. Even as the tempo picks up and Paul starts to sing the constant sound of the drums cans till be heard. The song starts out with various different techno sounds and then the sound of the drums that remains constant throughout the rhythm whereas the techno sounds fade and other sounds kick in.
