“Words do not express thoughts very well. they always become a little different immediately they are expressed, a little distorted, a little foolish. And yet it also pleases me and seems right that what is of value and wisdom to one man seems nonsense to another.” (Hesse, pg. 145)

In this part of the book, Herman Hesse utilizes numerous rhetorical devices in his writing. The main point of this quote is to explain that there are many times in which words are unable to express a person’s ideas and thoughts, however they still are essential in communicating our wisdoms and truth. One of the clearest rhetorical devices the author in this passage is repetition. In repeating the word “little” multiple times, it emphasizes the subtle changes our words make to our ideas, and the limitations we have in communicating we are really thinking about. He also uses antithesis by contrasting two ideas. At first, it is stated that words are inadequate and limiting in expressing thoughts, but he later states that they they still have value as they provide diversity in ways of thinking, and they allow other to make their own interpretations of an idea.

Meeting topic - Sebastian

“One must find the source within one’s own self, one must possess it. Everything else was seeking - a detour, an error.” (Hesse, Page 7)

In this excerpt from Siddhartha, they author uses rhetorical devices to give the reader a message and mentality, the one has fulfillment in themselves, and everything else is a distraction. He uses repetition by saying “one must” in order to emphasize the importance of each individual person reflecting on themselves. It also creates a sense of importance and urgency to fulfill oneself. Another rhetorical device he uses is hyperbole, when he says that everything other than one’s inner strength and growth is not important. Clearly this is not fully true, but it adds more of an emphasis to self improvement, and contrasts it with other things that may cause someone to stray from their goal. One final device he uses is metaphor by saying the distractions in our lives is a ”detour”, again reiterating the point that we should focus on our own growth and fulfillment.

This quote from Siddhartha was very inspiring to me. Especially in a time that I am stressed with school work and other distractions in my life, I found it helpful to come across this message. I interpreted it as a call to improve oneself, and that their inner strength and growth should be their main focus. I deal with many distractions such as social media and entertainment everyday and this quote helps me to realize that it is just leading me away from becoming the best version of myself. It also helps me realize that inner fulfillment is possible, and it is only possible by inner reflection. I have only read a short portion of the book so far, but in this portion I have already found inspiration and a message that I can relate to my own life and experience. That is why I am eager to read more and reflect on myself and this book.

Question: Is personal growth and fulfillment really our only goal? Are the other genuinely good things that we focus on a part of that? Or are they still distractions?
