It represents Ulrich and Georg finally reconciling their dispute after many generations. The wine flask is introduced into the story when Ulrich offers it to Georg in their time of despair. 
As the story progresses, the wine flask brings the two men together forming a friendship. Even though the feud between both of their families had been settled by a simple wine flask, in the end it was too late. The two men would not have the chance to be saved because they were eaten by wolves.
