Reasons America Was Prepared for Industrialization

Americas was not the first country to start industrializing, but they still were still able to industrialize rapidly and become a world power. A big reason for this is because America had an abundance of natural resources. There was plenty of oil, coal, iron ore and timber. The U.S. also had large amounts of immigrants flooding in and created a large work force. Also, the American people had a great spirit of invention. There were many people who put their mind to creating new inventions which would better everyone's lives. Finally, the U.S. government did not interfere with business. These conditions were necessary for all of the businesses, construction, and economic growth of America.

The Populist Party

The Populist Party was made up of many farmers. The railroad industry was abusing the farmers because they knew that the farmers relied heavily on trains. The farmers were struggling and had to work extremely hard and weren't getting enough in return for feeding America. In the end they were able to get the government to step in to help. The populist party is proof that people can join together to and make major changes in the U.S. government.

Andrew Carnegie was the owner of a steel factory. He was the biggest steel manufacturer in america at the time of the industrial revolution. Steel was important for building bridges, skyscrapers, machines, and railroads. Carnegie was also a philanthropist, so he donated massive amounts of money to charity. He helped the U.S. grow and was also a great example of what a big businessman should be like.

George Pullman was an an American inventor and industrialist. His is most famous for his luxurious sleeping car invention. Trains were new and an exciting and efficient way to travel, but they were uncomfortable. George Pullman realized this and invented a train car that was comfortable and made traveling enjoyable. This idea of traveling in comfort has carried over to other forms of transportation such as cars.

During this unit I learned what the word "philanthropist" means and about an example of a philanthropist. A philanthropist is someone who gives away large amounts of money to charitable causes. The famous philanthropist I learned about was Andrew Carnegie who I wrote about on a previous post. This word made me realize how rich people aren't all selfish and that they can better the world if their hearts are in the right place.

The most interesting thing that I learned in this unit was about the triangle shirtwaist fire. It was fascinating and also scary to learn about the conditions of the factory and its workers. I found it hard to believe that the owners never thought about anyone's safety. The most interesting thing about this fire was that there were countless other factories very similar to this one. They were all tragedies waiting to happen and the triangle shirtwaist factory just so happened to be the first. Thankfully, we learned from our mistakes and made changes regarding safety requirements following the fire.

One way that our lives still connect with the industrial revolution is how we are able to eat. For most Americans, there is always food available. Whether its from our kitchen cabinets or from the drive-thru, food isn't hard to find. This is thanks to the industrial revolution. Improvements in farming equipment, machinery, and transportation allow food to be wherever and whenever we need it.
