Major Depressive Disorder has many different causes that can come from various places and occur at any time in life, though the most prevalent cause of the disorder is genetics. The risk of suffering from MDD triples if you have a close relative -- a parent, sibling, or child -- that suffers from MDD.

The symptoms of the disorder, in addition to contributing to or worsening pre-existing depression, can also cause the disorder, including things like overeating or deregulating your sleep schedule.

Physiological factors are thought to contribute to MDD as well, though it's unknown to what extent. Changes in socioeconomic stability, such as a loss of a job, or a divorce, can also lead to a patient developing Major Depressive. For children and young adults, abuse from their parents or a romantic partner, being kicked out of their house or running away, and bullying can lead to the development of MDD.

Bernice suffered with MDD for a long time before a suicide attempt finally steered her in the direction of getting treatment. She addresses misconceptions like the idea that medication alone can solve all the person's problems, or that simply trying hard enough to be happy isn't effective. She explains that it required a combination of medication and therapy in order for her to manage her depression, and that even now, after many years of suffering from it, it has not been "cured." She says it's very important to stick with treatments, however, in order to continue to maintain a "normal" lifestyle.

My Character: Nico Minoru

Nico Minoru is a main character in Marvel's TV and comic series Runaways. She exhibits signs early on of suffering from MDD that likely began shortly after her sister was found dead by apparent suicide in her room one morning. She experiences a dramatic appearance change, going from relatively normal to dressing in an extreme goth fashion (which can be observed in the clip linked.) We also see a tarnished relationship with her family and her old friend group. She prefers to be alone and spends most of her time listening to music by herself. She also often goes into her sister's old room just to spend time in there, and clearly misses her. Because her sister dies two years prior to the show's plot, these symptoms have persisted long enough to meet the criteria of a diagnosis. She is almost always in a bad mood early on in the show and usually sees the negative in situations rather than the positive. She blames herself for her sister's death even though it had nothing to do with her, and she feels immense guilt for it. She is especially irritable to her parents and former friends.
