In Francesco Ricardo Monti's painting "The Spanish Era," he illustrates how the Cross and the Sword entered the nation. In front of our ancestors, an Augustinian monk raises a cross, and a soldier in a magnificent costume wields a sword that resembles a burnished cross. A Spanish galleon, a kind of freight ship that traveled the Pacific for about 250 years, may be seen in the background. Monti's figure arrangement reveals the identity of the conquerors. According to Jesuit author Miguel A. Bernad, we have been impacted and assimilated by foreign influences, making them a part of who we are, even when some people dislike them. Although some people may long for a "pure Filipino culture" free of American, Chinese, Indian, or Spanish influences, Bernad contends that such a culture does not exist. Our past shapes who we are.

It reminds me that our culture is alive and colorful because of the way people live together in unity.

The painting shows the lively and joyful life of students at FEU. It reminds us of moments in school that can be looked back on during reunions. Someday, these young students will grow into adults, whether as mothers, professionals, or businesswomen, and they will remember how FEU helped guide and shape their future.

In my interpretation, the painting reflects the simple yet meaningful daily life of students. The different poses of the girls show how school is not just about studying but also about friendships, routines, and growth. It feels like a snapshot of youth, a stage where everything still seems light and playful, but at the same time, it prepares us for the responsibilities we’ll encounter later on.
