I would explain to the confused student that the central idea is the main thing to take away from the text. To find central idea you must first read the text. Then, think about what the author wants you to get from the text. An example of this would be if the author said, "The black dog ate my homework." The author doesn't want you to take away that the dog is black. The central idea of the text would be that the dog ate the homework not that the dog is black.

It could be how to complete a process, or even what makes the sky blue. If the text was, "The sky is blue during the day because of... The shade of blue and the different colors vary by many different factors," the central idea would not be that the sky has many colors, but that the sky is blue during the day because of... Many times, when explaining the central idea, you will need to provide evidence.

In order to help someone who was struggling with writing the central idea I would first help them break it down. I'd advise them to read the text and gather the moral of the story;that can be done by getting the most important part of the text. Details and paying attention could help the student understand the central idea. Another thing that would help would be envisioning the central idea as the meat of the burger. Most often the central idea is the most important part

To help someone who is struggling with central idea, I would tell them that central idea is what the author is writing about. The central idea can be best described as the dominant impression or the universal, generic truth found in the story. It is the basic idea that ties up all loose strings in a passage. Then I would make sure the student still isn't confused. If the student was still confused, I would give them a passage and then ask them to tell me what it was about in a sentence or two.
