The first one turned out well, and it was actually very exciting, because it was the first time I successfully created a piece on the wheel! However, it wasn't as round and friendly as I dreamed it to be, so I tried again with this piece! This was my first time trimming as well, and although it turned out well overall, it was a bit of a struggle. Centering the piece and trimming the sides went well, but trying to make a footring was troublesome. My tool didn't stay in one place when I was trying to make the rings, and whenever I got to the center, I'd lose control. It was as round and friendly as the rest of the mug, and was meant to fit my pointer finger while I added a thumb rest on top. I think I did a good job of carefully creating the handle, drying it to leather hard, and then slowly but surely slip-scoring it on. Mr. Stout's clarification that the slip score method is effective because it softens the clay so pieces join more smoothly was crucial for me to understand. I didn't understand that before, but now that I did, I was able to more effectively slip score in a thorough (and hopefully seamless) way. Two small grievances I have about the handle though is that it droops a little, and I wish it was a little smaller. One thing Mr. Stout told me when I was slip scoring it was that the holes I was stabbing to break up the clay weren't the best method, because if not properly mixed and joined, it could create little air pockets. Next time, I'll keep in mind his suggestion of a slip rake, which still softens the surface, but does so more smoothly. I added white slip all around the bottom of the piece, and tried to texture it to look like the nest around the egg. I hope after it becomes bone dry and is fired, the color differentiation will start.
