         <title>What is Cyanotypes?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Cyanotypes is a 19th century photographic priniting process.&nbsp; The process of cyanotypes was used by engineers far into the 20th century for t was a low cost and simple way of producing copies of drawings, blue prints. The method of Cyanotypes was discovered by a english Scientist named John Herschel in 1842. The Cyanotype process is a negative process, what appears black on the images will appear white in the final product</div>]]></description>

         <title>Anna Atkins</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Anna Atkins was a English botanist, some have even argued that Ann as one of the very first femal photographers. Anna was born in 1799 and died 1871, she is most recognised for creating cyanotypes of plants and using these images in her books. Anna became aquaintated with William Henry Fox Tablot and John Herschel- two important pioneers in the world of cyanotypes and photogrpaher as a whole. There are said to be only 13 copies of Annas book 'English Algae' in the world, many at various stages of being complete</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div> You will need : <br>100 ml distilled water for 25g of Green Ferric Ammonium (A)<br>100ml distilled water for  10g of Potassium Ferriciyanide (B)<br><br>In seperate containers labelled A and B <br>combine the distilled water and Green Ferric Ammonium in container A<br>combine the distilled water and Potassium Ferriciyanide in container B<br>Once you have combined and throughouly mixed your chemicals, in a light safe container, combine the two to be one liquid. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Did something go wrong in the mixing? - Where the wrong measurements used?<br><br>Was there an issue with the material used- was it not suited to accept and soak in the chemicals, was it the wrong colour, was the viscosity of the material to thick or thin?<br><br>Was there a problem with the large format print? - was it not able to let the UV light through, was it not big enough? was there not enough contrast? <br><br>Was there a problem with the exposure time?- Did the exposure time run to long ? Was the exposure time stopped too soon? <br><br>Was there an error with the UV Light exposure- was the chemically painted material exposed to too much UV light? Was it exposed to too light UV light? <br> <br>Did a problem occur during the washing stage- Was the material not washed for long enough meaning the chemicals could not be fully removed there for altering the process? Was the material washed for too long there for washing away too much material and then damaging the process </div>]]></description>

         <title>Step by step</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>First step involves the (1) chemical preparation <br>then following with the (2) material preparation, leading on to (3) allowing the material to dry in a dark space where light can not get to the chemically applied material. <br>After this we (4) prepare a transparent negative if not yet made. <br>The following step is to then (5) take your chemically applied material, your transparency, a glass slab or bull dog clips to hold it into place. <br>This is all in preparation to (6) head outside to use the natural and best form of UV light; the sun. </div>]]></description>

         <title>Creating a transparency</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>To create your transparent negative. Select your image and open it in photoshop. When in photoshop remove all colour from the image, this can be done by inverting the image. Edit and scale your image to your desired intention. Just ensure that the contrast between black and white is high to ensure a high chances of sucess.<br><br>Printing your transparency can be done ona santander inkjet printer. Simply load your printer paper tray with a transparent ink jet sheet and print.<br><br>When this is done, place your transparency sheet with the ink AGAINST the chemically washed material. This will disallow any unwanted leakage of light.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The exposure time can vary depending on a number of factors such as the strength of your UV light, the concentration of your chemical solution and the type of material that is being used. I would advise doing a few test strips on smaller versions of your material to get a rough idea on how long your exposure time may be.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>When carrying out any experiment for the first time I would advise being hands on in the process, and staying by your experimentation that way you are able to observe the stages of change. A way to tell the developemt of your exposed sheet is to look at tthe changes in the colour of your material of choice. When the chemical solution is first applied, the material should now take on a yellowish tint, once exposed to UV light that tint should change to green and then to a grey.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Washing</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Once your image has been exposed, wash your material in cold/ warm water until all traces of the unexposed yellow tint is no longer visible. Leave your material in the water with water running on it for a few more mins until you are fully comfortable that any un exposed chemicals is no longer traceable. The washing step is crucial, if you do not properly wash your material it could carry on exposing and your image will be ruined.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Perserving your cyanotype image can be tricky. Cyanotypes can begin to fade over time when exposed to constant life. If you have chosen to use frabic for your experimentation, only wash the fabric by hand using non-phosphate soap, this is to prevent it turning yellow.<br><br></div>]]></description>
