People seem to have found evidence that some form of written language was being attempted by our Stone Age ancestors, an idea that if substantiated would push back the recognized birth of writing from about 45,000 years ago. Recently, in 2021, cave art of a pig found in an Indonesian island, and dated to over 45,500 years, has been reported.

The pigeon post service dates back 2,000 years ago.
Pigeon post is the use of homing pigeons to carry messages. Pigeons are effective as messengers due to their natural homing abilities. The pigeons are transported to a destination in cages, where they are attached with messages, then the pigeon naturally flies back to its home where the recipient could read the message. They have been used in many places around the world. Pigeons have also been used to great effect in military situations, and are in this case referred to as war pigeon.

Newspapers began in the 16th century.
The first printed newspapers were published weekly in Germany from 1609. Typically they were heavily censored by the government and reported only foreign news, and current prices. After the English government relaxed censorship in 1695, newspapers flourished in London and a few other cities including Boston and Philadelphia . By the 1830s high speed presses could print thousands of papers cheaply, allowing for low daily costs.

Developed in the 1830s and 1840s by Samuel Morse and other inventors, the telegraph revolutionized long-distance communication. It worked by transmitting electrical signals over a wire laid between stations.
Signal fires were widely used in Europe and elsewhere for military purposes. The Roman army made frequent use of them, as did their enemies, and the remains of some of the stations still exist. Few details have been recorded of European signalling systems and the possible messages.
