Sinatra’s song, “I’m Gonna Live Till I Die,” represents Stephen’s many close encounters with death, his hardships, and his betrayals. His naive and impulsive character was never hindered due to Stephen’s unyielding, pure spirit, and I believe that this song represents just that.

Stephen moves in with his father (a physicist) in a secret base in New Mexico after an air raid kills his cousin. There, he meets a boy his age (Alexei), and is presented with the mystery of the project his father is working on, later called the Gadget by Dr. Soifer. Stephen and Alexei are later injured by the impact of a bomb explosion following their pursuit of the physicists in order to find the secret, and Stephen realizes that the scientists working on the bomb are planning to bomb Japan after the fall of the other two axis powers. Once Hitler kills himself, Stephen finds out Alexei and his family are Russian spies, and Alexei gets run over by a train after his attempt to kill Stephen for what he discovered.

I would give this book a 5/5. I think this book was absolutely amazing, and was able to fit in so much information and detail in just 167 pages. I especially loved how Zindel wrote Stephen’s mixed feelings about his father. The plot twist, somehow, was actually surprising and really shocked me. This book was absolutely beautiful and kept me entertained. I would definitely recommend this to read.
