As we learned earlier in this unit, fairytales must both attract the child and their parent. This creates different themes for children and adults. Different elements of the story allow the different audiences to focus on what they relate to. A child would focus on Coraline and what she learns, but a parent could look at the bad parenting of her parents and reflect.
"Alice in Wonderland" gives a message to children of a child growing up or maturing and trying to navigate the confusing world of adults. The world of adults comes from how adults have stopped asking how or why they do things. This is seen in the King and queen. Specifically, the queen when she wants to behead Alice because she thought Alice stole her tart. Over time, Alice, begins to grow, mature and lose the imagination that she once had as a child. This results in her waking up from wonderland.
Coraline's story also involves a fantasy world but the message portrayed is different than Alice's. Coraline's fantasy world is one that is 'better' than the one she lives in. It encompasses every detail of her life from her neighbors and even her friends that she misses. She finds out that the world was all a lie and was tailored to make her think it is better. Through her experiences in that world, she realizes the value of her real family/friends/neighbors. She even learns bravery and courage as she has to make the choice to save her parents and the past kids.
Both stories follow a child through their adventures, experiences, and what they learn. The two characters mature or come to a realization and leave their imaginary world behind.

When even looking into all of the details of the character you can get a glimpse of what the tone is. Alice has light hair, and Coraline has dark hair. The animal companions of Alice consist of energetic animals compared to Coraline who has a stray black cat that doesn't speak for most of the film but when it does its voice is dark and raspy. Additionally, Coraline's environment is very gray, empty, and dead. When inside the other world it is always dark with the only light outside of the house is from the moon. The events that happen in Coraline can even be unsettling at times such as the dead children's ghosts. Also, when the other mother changes form from her mother to a tall slender humanoid to a spider. In contrast, Alice's story is more playful and imaginative. The characters are crazy, the events are absurd, and even the language is nonsensical. Coraline is not happy with her new life because she thinks it is boring and her parents will not let her go out and have fun because of the rain. Both her parents are workaholic's so they neglect her while they work. One day while wandering around her dull house she found the hidden door and found the other world. Alice is also bored with her life and she is a very curious girl who's always daydreaming. In the beginning, she talks about what her own world would be like and how it would be way different than normal. This shows how she is very curious. While she was playing she found a rabbit hole and started climbing in it to see where it led which ended up being how she got to wonderland. While she was in Wonderland she wanted to learn and see everything she could. In Alice in Wonderland, Wonderland is a dream in Alice's head. It is happy magical place, and it's true intention is a wonderland. It is being corrupted by the tyrannical queen, who rules with an iron fist. Alice defeats the queen and then leaves Wonderland, leaving the animals who lived there to live happily ever after. In Coraline, the magical place she goes to is real. It seems like its happy and good, however it's true intention is evil and dark. The world is a trap to lure children into giving their souls away to a demon. In Coraline, the magical world was naturally corrupt, but masked by the monster to look appealing, which is the complete opposite of Alice in Wonderland, where the world was naturally happy and good, but was masked by the queen's corruption. As said before, at the end of Alice in Wonderland, Alice leaves it off a better place than when she found it. In Coraline, she completely destroys the magical world, instead of leaving it better off, and the only inhabitant inside, the other mother, is left to suffer for eternity. I believe that the contrast between the true intentions of the world is directly linked to the reality status of the world. But when I started thinking more about her life and less about her actual attributes I started to realize that I had been wrong. She is an only child with her parents all alone in the house. Even though I'm not an only child I can relate to that because both of my siblings graduated and moved away from home so suddenly I became an "only child". With both of my parents working it was me home alone a lot of the days. I've never moved to a new place but this was a weird change for me because I was so close to my siblings. So I know what it is like to be bored around the house. Although I never found a secret door that led to an alternate reality, I have volleyball. She also has a little community that helped her and they started making changes. She is a girl and I am a boy. Coraline is young and so am I but not as young. She even has a different hair color than I. However, when I began to look into her thoughts and actions I realized we are more alike than seems. The movie starts off with Coraline moving into her new home. Although this happened close to 2 years ago, I moved here. I don't think I complained as much as she did as I liked California before I moved here; however, I did leave all of my friends and memories behind. Although Coraline did not like the move, she eventually embraced it as seen at the end of the movie. My mom worked during the day and came home to see me at night, and I saw my dad on the weekends, so during the day I was on my own to be with my friends and fight my own battles. Coraline was excited to find a happy place that she could escape to to have fun while she wasn't able to be with her parents, just as I would find places to bike to or things to do to occupy my time with my friends while my parents were busy.
