My school system had just begun a new teacher mentoring program when I started working at my school. I was mentored by one of our second grade teachers. She observed some of my lessons, and we reflected on those lessons together. I observed one of her lessons and wrote a reflection on it. Also, as part of the new teacher mentoring program, I observed one of our third grader teacher's math lessons and one of our kindergarten teacher's writing lessons. I got to visit a first grade teacher's classroom outside of our school system and observe her for a day. One of the requirements of the mentoring program was reading and reflecting on the book Teach Like a Champion. It would be very helpful to gain more skills on managing difficult conversations. I would also like to learn how to balance direct feedback with coaching styles that are more self-directed. I had training on catalyst training, which is very direct feedback and knowing when to use it versus a more self-directed style can be a challenging decision to make. I would also like to learn more mentor/coaching styles. The more techniques I can develop to help in my mentoring the more thoroughly I can help those whom I serve. ]]> 2019-03-09 22:51:17 UTC https://padlet.com/jessicaaprilwilliams/j5dtaaf2h5ii/wish/339610477 srsche18 https://padlet.com/jessicaaprilwilliams/j5dtaaf2h5ii/wish/353233461 Cultivating resilience and being a good mentor include so many more things than I had originally thought.  First and foremost I learned that knowing yourself is key to both being resilient and being a good mentor.  It is the foundation in which everything else builds on.  Secondly, listening, rather than hearing, is critical in mentoring new teachers.  Active listening promotes trust and respect, helps to resolve problems, and promotes better understanding of people.  Thirdly, being a mentor offers so much more than simply feeling good about helping others. You develop strong leadership skills, gain new perspectives, and the lessons you teach can also serve as reminders to yourself to follow your own good advice! Finally, remember to find those bright spots and help others to find theirs. I value that this book taught me to appreciate and accept all of my emotions and to identify and accept their validity. For example, anger is real, it will happen, my focus is on identifying that emotion in the moment and taking the pause to react to my anger in a way that reflects my core values. Through this I develop healthy responses to situations that in most cases, are well beyond my control, which fosters my resiliency. My choices, my freedom to chose my response, gives me strength. I find her writing to be insightful and well researched. It is authentic and speaks to the truth of situations not just the ideal hypothetical. The honesty with which she writes provides me a clearer picture of how to coach in real life circumstances. When I read her work I reflect naturally because her ideas stimulate my thinking. So I will read her other texts so I can explore coaching more deeply. I still am reluctant to go there because I can see how either could backfire with severe job consequences for me as mentor or for my mentee. I have also learned a lot more about Emotional Intelligence because I always took the stance that this was the weakest link in Gardner's originally conceptualization of multiple intelligences. The research has come a long way in the last few decades, and it now seems to point me into an entirely different realm of possibilities as a mentor. When I first began teaching, I didn't realize I would need a course like this so soon in my career. Prior to taking this course, I didn't know just how important it would be for me to cultivate my own resilience, and I certainly didn't know how to do this. This course has taught me about the 12 habits of resilient educators and how to develop those daily. By practicing these habits daily, I'll develop resilient dispositions. If I attend to my own transformation, I can help lead transformational efforts in others through an effective mentoring program.
