A food item that ties to my family and culture would tamales. It was a tradition passed down for several generations, yet the recipe is prized and has always stayed the same. Gathering together to make tamales with my mom and family was a symbol of community and sharing. It was a labor of love because the smell of the ingredients would nauseate me, but we would work through it and prepare them, turning them into little offerings. It is one of the traditions I hold onto that I shared with my mother and made sure to carry on when she passed on.
