Water shortage in indigenous countries

Dozens of First Nations communities in Canada lack clean and safe drinking water, which is a violation of the UN-recognized human right to water and sanitation. Although there has been progress, 28 long-term drinking water advisories remain on reserves, and there is a funding deficit for the maintenance and operation of drinking water systems, estimated at $138 million per year. The Liberal government's promotion of public-private partnerships (P3s) as a solution has been criticized for increasing costs and leading to the privatization of water and job losses. The Council of Canadians supports greater control by and for First Nations over water as a basic step toward reconciliation and ending the crisis.

Link: https://canadians.org/fn-water/#:~:text=A%20single%20drinking%20water%20advisory,to%20safe%2C%20clean%20drinking%20water.&text=73%20per%20cent%20of%20First,must%20be%20fixed%20for%20good.

CBC News investigated 34 cases in Canada involving the death or disappearance of Indigenous women, which authorities ruled were not due to foul play, but families suggest otherwise. In many cases, evidence was found suggesting suspicious circumstances and unexplained bruises, warranting further investigation. Advocates for missing and murdered Indigenous women believe these cases should be examined in a national inquiry. CBC's project on missing and murdered Indigenous women includes a profile for each person and a case explorer for more than 250 cases.

Link: https://www.cbc.ca/missingandmurdered/

The discovery of 200 unmarked graves at an old school in Canada in May 2021 brought attention to the country's history of residential schools. From the 1880s to the 20th century, the Canadian government forcibly took over 150,000 indigenous children from their families and placed them in these schools, funded by the state and run by churches, to assimilate and Christianize them. Many children were physically and sexually abused, and thousands never made it home. The last residential school closed in 1998, but the Muskowekwan residential school in Saskatchewan remains, a reminder of this shameful chapter in Canadian history.

Link: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/canada-residential-schools-unmarked-graves-indigenous-children-60-minutes-2023-02-12/

A recent study has highlighted the ongoing issue of food insecurity among First Nation households in Canada. The study found that 48% of these households struggle to provide enough food for their families, with an even higher rate of 60% in Alberta. The problem is especially pronounced in remote communities with no year-round access to a service center. These communities reported significantly higher rates of food insecurity. The issue is particularly concerning for families with children, who are even more likely to struggle. The study highlights the need for action to address food insecurity in First Nation communities across Canada.

Link: https://globalnews.ca/news/6136161/first-nations-food-insecurity-study/

More than one in six Indigenous people in Canada (17.1%) lived in crowded housing in 2021, a decline from 2016 but still higher than the non-Indigenous population. For Inuit people living in Nunavut, Inuvialuit, and outside Inuit Nunangat, the share living in crowded housing increased from 2016 to 2021. Multigenerational households were the most common living arrangement for First Nations people in crowded housing. Indigenous people were also almost three times more likely to live in a dwelling in need of major repairs in 2021 than the non-Indigenous population, with a 2.3 percentage point decrease in the gap between the two groups from 2016 to 2021.

Link: https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2021/as-sa/98-200-X/2021007/98-200-X2021007-eng.cfm

Over 50% of indigenous adults over 35 have type 2 diabetes worldwide, with the numbers predicted to rise. The issue has reached epidemic proportions in some communities and is a significant threat to their existence. Indigenous people also suffer from poorer health, reduced quality of life, and up to 20 years lower life expectancy than non-indigenous people. Poverty, poor housing, lack of access to medical care, and cultural barriers contribute to the disproportionate impact of tuberculosis on indigenous people, which continues to affect them globally. Existing programs to combat tuberculosis often do not reach indigenous people due to these barriers.

Link: https://www.un.org/development/desa/indigenouspeoples/mandated-areas1/health.html
