Making sure that my students understand that failure and not getting something the first, second, even third time is okay, and that each individual student learns at a different pace. Creating a classroom environment that celebrates failures of classmates and gets them ready for reflection and try number two!!! Having this environment of community and understanding of failure and how healthy it is (to a point) for the students, so that they see that success comes out of failure.

DON'T LET FAILURE STOP YOU, THE WORLD WOULD NEVER KNOW OF THESE PEOPLE IF THEY LET FAILURE WIN!

Practicing the right use of Words and Encouragement

When a student does a good job or even a poor job on a test or HW assignment making sure you congratulate or instruct them in a positive and way that will encourage the Growth Mindset is key. In my classroom I'll make sure to be careful of what I say to students when I want to congratulate, or try to help them out with a problem. For example instead of saying to a student " good job, you're so smart" you can say " great job, I can see the effort you put into this." This simple change in words can have a major impact on how they view themselves and how they work. You emphases the work put in on the assignment so they know you can see the effort and work they put into it. Or if they are having a hard time with something instead of saying " should of listened closer" you can say " what can we fix that would make this work?" Putting the emphasis on what they can do to fix the problem, and what ways can they think creatively to assess the problem.

Introducing students to fixed and growth mindsets

I feel the first step to portraying a growth mindset in the classroom is actually showing them and telling them what mindset is and the differences between fixed and growth mindsets are. At the beginning of each year I will take my kids through a day of showing them what the differences are between fixed and growth mindsets are. Showing them the consequences of having a fixed mindset and how that can lead you down a hard road for the future. But having a growth mindset can set you up for success, being open to failure and learning from your mistakes, will hopefully show them the importance of understanding what mindset is and the importance of having a growth mindset is to their education and future lives.

Here's a fun poster showing the difference between Fixed and Growth mindsets!!
