Symbolism is used in the story "Once Upon a Time" as to represent the theme like the boy. For example, Gordimer states "she was afraid that some day such people might come up the street...and stream in...workmen came and stretched the razor-bladed coils all around the walls of the house...the bleeding mass of the little boy was hacked out of the security coil..." (Gordimer, lines 71-207). This means that the boy is the symbol for a possible theme that fear could cause negative effects since because of his parents' fears, they took very careful precautions like security systems but some of them end up killing or extremely injuring the boy.
