Kathy works as a carer and gets special perks like getting to pick which donor she "cares" after. Most of the donors she looks after are jealous of her because she went to Hailsham. 
Tommy - Tommy doesn't seem very popular or liked by many.
Ruth- Kathy is reunited with Ruth and brings old memories of Hailsham to the surface.
Conflict:
- Tommy is picked last for football teams. He throws a tantrum because he was laughed at and when Kathy tries to help, he swings, hitting her in the face. 
- No matter where Kathy looks, she cannot find Hailsham anywhere.
